Building Classroom Libraries

This series of courses was created by a subgroup of the ISD Early Literacy Coaching Network to provide support to district literacy leadership teams focused on building and supporting classroom libraries within their school. The courses are aligned with the Essential Instructional Practices in Early and Elementary Literacy.

This course will introduce the importance of setting up high quality classroom libraries. This is a helpful starting point for elementary school staff that have a collective focus on establishing and building strong classroom libraries within their school. After learning about the importance of classroom libraries in part 1, this course will cover how to inventory classroom libraries in your school and how to use the ABC's of classroom libraries to determine classroom library needs. Once you have inventoried your classroom libraries to determine needs, you will need a plan to build and sustain robust classroom libraries. This course will explore different approaches to planning for classroom libraries as well as share ideas on how to fund those libraries. In the final course of the classroom library series, we will look at how teachers can create a welcoming classroom library space that provides access and choice to books for every student in their classroom.
