The Connection Week 10 Term 1
Huapai District School 7th April 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
This morning, while drinking a coffee with my breakfast, I watched a clip on the internet about a group of lifesavers surf boat racing. (@orewaboaties on tiktok). The team launched at top speed from the beach, rowed out ferociously over the breakers to a buoy then charged back to the beach to finish. The passion and energy was palpable through the screen. The team were all on the same page with the same goal and they all played their part in achieving it.
The crew were being coxed by a powerfully encouraging voice. He knew when to push the team hard, knew when to look to the beach to sight the goal, knew when to look to the waves to prepare the team to dig in and work harder than ever, knew when to brace them if a wave was crashing. His voice was passionate and positive. On the way back to shore the team surfed a wave and while riding it, continued to work hard. The celebration on the beach was one of pure elation! They not only celebrated the result, but also the way they had worked so hard during the event. The cox shouts “This is our new standard!”
As we approach our own shoreline - the end of term, it’s time for us all to reflect on the way we have worked together as a team this term. As a school community we’ve used our powerfully encouraging voices to cheer our children on, to help them dig in and to work harder than ever, to brace them for the ever changing waves of Covid and the associated rules, and to keep their eyes set positively on the goal. While we are surfing the wave in, we are still working incredibly hard and it is now time to celebrate not only the results of the term, but also the way our community has worked together so amazingly well. We have dug deep and we can all feel proud. “This is our new standard!”
We are excited that we can now all be together again and look forward to seeing you back in school. Please see below a special invitation for ALL Huapai families to celebrate.

Student Of The Week
Marley (Year 5) says: “I love Huapai, it’s a really great school. The teachers and the playgrounds are really good. My favourite thing to learn about is maths because maths is a puzzle and I like puzzles. I enjoy playing rugby during the break times with my friends.”

Our students are unable to be on road patrol without an adult. The timing of road patrol is from the 8:30am school open bell until 8:50am. If you are able to assist here, or your child is keen to join the team, please contact kirstin.robinson@hds.school.nz as soon as possible.

Huapai +
Our before and after school programme is owned and managed by the school. Any profits are used for the school. Under the great leadership of Huapai + from Luke Kearney, we have a well established programme and brilliant reputation.
We are struggling to find staff for our growing programme. This could be a good option for senior students (must be 16 years or older) and also for parents or contacts of our school community. This could be during the school tremor over the holiday break. If you can assist in suggesting our programme for casual employment to anyone that you think might be suitable, we would appreciate this.

Scholastic Book Orders Have Moved Online!
Year 7&8 Science Start Right Workbooks
As a strongly encouraged and highly beneficial supplementary resource to our Year 7&8 science programme, a Start Right Science Workbook is available, payable through HERO ($17.50) with collection from your child's teacher.
The units in these workbooks cover the New Zealand Science curriculum in preparation for Year 9&10 science and fit in nicely with the topics covered in science at school as a pre or post-learning revision/consolidation. Though not compulsory, we will reference, mark and use this resource to supplement the school-based programme. As this book is an optional resource, it is, however, encouraged for our Year 7&8 students to have a copy.
