District 30 Board Brief
October 12, 2023 - Board of Education Meeting Summary
Students give us so much to celebrate
Dear District 30 Community,
Our students' accomplishments were front and center during this month's Board of Education meeting on Thursday.
The Board recognized the newly inducted members of the Maple Student Council, congratulating them on their leadership. Student achievement and growth were outlined in a report on data from the Illinois Assessment for Readiness (IAR) and Measures of Academic Progress (MAP).
The IAR informs our Illinois Report Card, and results and summative designations will be released later this month. Today, however, I am so proud to share that District 30 remains among the top scoring districts in Illinois and the nation in both English language arts (ELA) and math, as supported by data from the Illinois Assessment for Readiness (IAR) and Measures of Academic Progress (MAP).
This is wonderful news, and we are proud of our highly talented staff, dedicated students, and supportive families! Additionally, the district has prioritized continuous improvement and is committed to ensuring we regularly reflect on our practices and make adjustments to maximize growth and support for our students and staff.
In this spirit, we are focusing on improving ELA instructional practices and updating the classroom resources teachers use to increase student engagement and growth. We also ask for your partnership in ensuring student attendance is prioritized. This is crucial to allow our staff optimal time to work with students and provide them with the high-quality instruction and care they need to be successful both academically and in social-emotional growth.
Read on to explore additional meeting highlights, including honors for our principals during Principal Appreciation Week/Month!
Thank you,
Dr. Emily Tammaru
Superintendent of Schools

They also discussed how the IAR informs the Illinois State Report Card, which will be released Oct. 30 with summative designations.
Highlights of the MAP data showed that District 30 students perform in the top 5 percent of the nation, while also exceeding growth expectations when compared to benchmark districts across the country.

She stated we are excited to highlight our staff next month and the wonderful work they do each day. Board members will also visit schools and classes throughout the week.
Living our Strategic Plan in our schools
Dr. Tammaru highlighted a new video featuring key values and priorities of our Strategic Plan and how they live and look in our schools each day. She stated that the video will be used in full and in smaller segments on social media, district30.org and direct District 30 communications to keep focus on the plan, while the video will also be used in recruitment efforts for teachers and staff.
Board reports
Character Counts
Board Member Dr. Stephanie Yohannan reported that the Character Counts in Glenview met this month and the member school districts discussed the committee's future. She said the committee was founded when character education was not widely taught in schools, but this is now a significant part of curriculum in District 30, Glenview District 34 and Northfield District 31. In light of this change that has developed over time, members determined to dissolve the committee and continue focusing on curricular character development in our local schools.
Dr. Yohannan also highlighted the efforts District 30 is making this week, October 20-26, during “Character Counts! Week,” including the community-wide food drive benefitting the Northfield Township Food Pantry. Additional efforts include Wescott's book drive for Bernie's Book Bank, school-wide lemonade stand to benefit The Sparc Foundation in Ashville, NC, for Hurricane Helene relief, and Willowbrook's spirit week that encouraged students to dress each day in the color of each Pillar of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
Dr. Tammaru noted that the Pillars are "part of everything we do" in District 30.
Personnel report
The Board approved Technology Instructor Anna Davis to serve as District 30 Summer School Principal and Maple Math Teacher Sarah Arends to serve as Assistant Principal for 2025.
They also approved the Instructional Assistant Michael Boarini to serve as a Maple extra duty stipend coach for the 2024-25 season, along with Ricardo Dominguez and Antwon Johnson in this coaching role.
