School Bus Safety
October 21 - 25 is School Bus Safety Week, but it is ALWAYS a good time to remind your children to use safe practices loading and unloading from school buses. Have them stand five giant steps (about 10 feet) away from the curb while waiting for the bus and teach them to look carefully for cars that may not stop like they are supposed to as the unload and/or cross the street.
For children unloading, teach them to look to the right as they exit to look for cars passing illegally on the right (unfortunately it happens). For teenagers on the road, make sure they know which road scenarios require a stop - violating stop-arm law can result in hefty fees of $420.
For more information about school bus and stop-arm safety, please visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website: www.nhtsa.gov/road-safety/school-bus-safety.
