Speech
Speaking Up for Speech at SJCS Diana J. Goodwin, MA, CCC-SLP
The Difficult R Sound
Many children are in speech therapy because they have difficulty saying the r sound.
These sounds are typically misarticulated, as a distorted sound or substituted for another
sound, throughout childhood but mastery by seven years of age is expected. Misarticulations can vary widely; the most common /r/ errors involve /w/ substitutions (e.g., “wabbit” for “rabbit”) or distortions (e.g., “watuh” for “water”).
Why is it so hard to pronounce /r/ Speech/language pathologists, parents, and teachers have found that r can be challenging due to a variety of conditions. The motor movement of the mouth (coordination of the lips, teeth, tongue, and airway) for /r/ articulation tends to be the most difficult aspect of proper production. Due to the difficulty of producing the r sounds correctly on command, these sounds tend to develop relatively late in a child’s speech development. With the SLPs’ modelling, prompting and feedback, children are retaught how to correctly produce these sounds. Mastery of the r Sound The two most common ways are of producing the r sound are: ● Bunched: This r production involves creating a “basket” with one’s tongue. ● Retroflexed: This r production involves having the base of the tongue rise up. Additionally, there is more than one r sound to master, since the position of the sound in the word and the preceding vowel or consonant impacts the sound the r produces. The r sound in the word “work” is different from the initial r in the word “rabbit” and different from the r sound in the word “bridge”. Unfortunately, mastery of one of these r variants doesn’t generalize to the other r sound variants. With instruction and practice with the SLP during therapy, completion of homework with the parent and a cooperative and motivated child, the r sounds can be mastered. The goal of speech therapy is to help a child become a confident and easy to understand speaker

This Sunday's Gospel from Luke 6:27-38 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“To you who hear I say,
love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
To the person who strikes you on one cheek,
offer the other one as well,
and from the person who takes your cloak,
do not withhold even your tunic.
Give to everyone who asks of you,
and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back.
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
For if you love those who love you,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners love those who love them.
And if you do good to those who do good to you,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners do the same.
If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners lend to sinners,
and get back the same amount.
But rather, love your enemies and do good to them,
and lend expecting nothing back;
then your reward will be great
and you will be children of the Most High,
for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
“Stop judging and you will not be judged.
Stop condemning and you will not be condemned.
Forgive and you will be forgiven.
Give, and gifts will be given to you;
a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing,
will be poured into your lap.
For the measure with which you measure
will in return be measured out to you.”
Box Top Goal
Our next Box Top goal is $400. Remember all you have to do is scan your receipts to help us reach this goal and all students will earn another dress down day.
