Greetings Lakeview Dolphin Kindergarten Parents,

It is an honor to introduce myself as your principal of Lakeview Fundamental Elementary School and welcome you to this extraordinary school community. I can assure you that I share in this school community’s commitment to caring for your children each day while providing them a world-class learning environment at the Little School With the Big Heart.
I am an experienced elementary teacher and building principal, but in addition to my role as an educator, I am first and foremost a mother and wife. In August, my son Stevie Jr. begins second grade at Lake St. George Elementary in Palm Harbor, FL.

The 2020-2021 school year will mark my 21st year in education. I am a home-grown Pinellas County student and leader attending Oakhurst Elementary, Largo Middle and Largo High.

My role as an elementary principal, where I have been most fulfilled in my life’s work, provides me the chance to work collaboratively with teachers daily, while also remaining connected to young students learning and growing in the classroom. I firmly believe that every child can excel and that the partnership between home and school builds confidence in students to use their powers to shape their future and the future of our community and our nation.

To our incoming dolphins, I cannot wait to meet you all! I hope that you are excited for this coming school year and that you are out this summer playing and reading tons of books with your family and friends. It is going to be a fun year learning together.
My door is always open to you. I wholeheartedly welcome your conversation and positive input throughout this year. Let us always keep our students as the primary focus of our work. I look forward to seeing you in the fall and celebrating our collective successes during the 2020-2021 school year.

• Students may check out one book at a time from our school library/media center every week.
• We encourage students to keep their book in their backpack when they are not reading it at home.

Arrival

Encourage your child to unpack and put away his/her belongings independently.

• Unpack backpack
• Put lunchbox away
• Turn in homework
• Use the restroom and get a drink
• Begin your morning activity

Dismissal

Let the teacher know of a change in How Your Child Will Be Going Home!!!

• Write a note for your child’s teacher and put it in the blue homework folder
• Call the office and leave a message with our secretary by noon.

Skills to work on over the summer:

• Be able to write your first name
• Know the alphabet- both uppercase and lowercase out of order
• Know the letter sounds
• Read with your child every day
• Discuss the concepts of same, different, more, and less
• Identify numbers 1-10

• Be able to hold and grip a pencil and scissors correctly

Encourage your child to draw pictures about their lives and tell stories about their pictures

• Include your child when you are writing the following:
• Grocery list
• Post cards
• Letters to relatives
• Emails

By End of Kindergarten students should be able to:

• Be able to recognize basic shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, hexagon, oval, and rhombus (it’s not a diamond anymore J)
• Count and write numbers 0-20 with 1:1 correspondence.
• Know 40 sight words
• Read simple (level D) books
• Write a simple story

Recess

• Every day there is Outdoor Learning /Recess. This is an opportunity for children to practice social skills in an open setting and get great exercise.

Physical Education

• 50 minutes of organized physical activity 3 days a week

Lunch

• Students have 30 minutes for lunch everyday

• Students may bring lunch or receive a school lunch.

• Currently, we have free breakfast for all students.

Rest Time

• Send a clean bath towel in every Monday for your child- Please do not send pillows, blankets,mats, dolls/stuffed animals or other toys

• Rest time is transitioned into quiet time with books and independent reading time for students.

KINDERGARTEN

• Backpack (no rolling backpacks)
• Rest towel (no larger than a bath towel- no mats please)
• Crayons – eight count (fat or thin)
• Markers – eight count (fat or thin)
• Pencils (Ticonderoga brand preferred but not required)
• Pencil Box (cigar box size)

• Paper products - paper plates, plastic utensils, Ziploc bags (assorted sizes),

• Jumbo sidewalk chalk
• Craft items - playdough (name brand only, please) googly eyes, pipe cleaners (assorted colors)

Membership in fundamental programs are a privilege enjoyed by interested and qualified Pinellas County students. Students are expected to exhibit exemplary conduct and participation. The fundamental school works best for students who thrive where expectations and routines are clearly defined. A strong emphasis is placed on the requirement that home and school work together to promote successful learning.

Parent Commitment

• Attend monthly PTA meetings
• Attend three parent/teacher conferences a year.
• Check homework for completion daily

• Provide transportation for your child.

Homework

• Every school night(excluding Fridays)
• Supports new skills and knowledge learned in the classroom.
• Students should be self motivated to excel at all tasks assigned.
• Sign and return agenda/folder daily
• Review, sign and return homework

Fundamental Discipline Policy

• Infractions are issued when a violation of a school policy has occurred.

• Seven infractions in a grading period will result in a referral to The Intervention and Appeal Committee (IAC).

Avoid Infractions by:

• Homework: completing assignments, completing the right assignment, signing agenda/homework, turned in on time
• Classwork: completed, prepared for class
• Behaviors: not being disruptive, not being harmful to others
• Attending detentions
• Returning all “sign and return” documents
• Following dress code
• Avoiding excessive tardies (arrive to school on time)

Avoid Behavior Infractions by:

• Following directions
• Using appropriate physical contact
• Respecting others
• Being honest
• Using appropriate language

What Happens If You Get An Infraction

• Three warnings (Infractions)=first detention (student stays after school 30 minutes)
• Any additional infraction = another detention
• Four detentions = Referral to the Intervention and Appeals Committee (IAC)

Dress Code:

Students are expected to dress appropriately to reflect pride in one’s self and school. Students violating the dress code will be sent to the office to call their parents/guardians and request a change of clothing. The student may be issued an infraction notice for violation of the dress code policy. Repeated violations may result in a referral to the schools’ Intervention and Appeal Committee. Any exception to the dress code policies must be approved by the school administration. The principal shall have the final decision regarding the enforcement of the student dress code. We also expect parents to use good judgment in their attire while volunteering in the building.

All students’ clothing must be worn in the manner in which it was designed to be worn; pants and skirts must be worn at waist level. Student dress and grooming shall be neat and clean. Prohibited are hairstyles and colors, and other fashion styles, which are disruptive to the school environment or educational process. The fundamental elementary school has dress requirements, which are in addition to the Code of Student Conduct.

Students must adhere to the following dress code:

Students should wear:

• Shirts, blouses, sweaters

• Jeans, pants, slacks- leggings only if the top/shirt covers appropriately - top may not be shorter than 3 inches above the knee

• Uniform shorts (from a designated vendor such as Cherokee, French Toast, At-Class, In-Design, etc.) that are khaki or navy blue in color. Cargo shorts – (uniform or non-uniform - are not acceptable.)

• Shorts, skirts, or dresses may NOT be shorter than three inches above the knee

• Closed toed shoes that are appropriate P.E. classes- For example- sneakers/athletic shoes.

• Sweaters or jackets when desired

• Students must wear socks, tights, peds or stockings

Students may NOT wear

• Sleeveless shirts, tank tops, sleeveless dresses or sleeveless blouses

• Pants shorter than ankle length (unless they are approved shorts)

• Jeans or pants that have holes or tears on knees, front, back, or other strategically placed locations

• Shorts longer than knee length. Cargo shorts of any type are not acceptable. (not uniform)

• Bare-midriff dresses, blouses or shirts

• See-through shirts or blouses, halter dresses or “tops” with spaghetti straps

• Skorts, culottes or divided skirts

• Backless shoes, thongs or sandals

• Hats, sunglasses and bandanas (indoors)

• Clothing which displays profanity, sexually suggestive phrases, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or advertisements for such products or other phrases.
