It's that time of year where we show our teachers how much they mean to us! Write your teacher a note, bring them a token of your appreciation, or just say "thank you!" Let's all help make next week a special one for the amazing staff of Swann Middle!

We would like to thank Mrs.Urena who is our GCS Jeanes Fellowship Coordinator, for coming out and reading to our students. Her efforts seek to educate, encourage and inspire students as she promotes literacy while focusing on enriching historical events/figures.

We would also like to thank New South Associates for coming out and providing our students with the opportunity to be archiologist for a class period. They had the joy of discovery, which required them to dig, analyze, discuss and attempt to identify objects found during their adventure with the New South Associates staff. Students were looking to discover artifacts from the old school that was located here on our campus.

Be sure to talk with your Lions each night about what standards they are working on and what activities they are doing to master those standards! Here is some general information to get the conversation started.

In Math, students use the Open Up curriculum. Click here to see the Open Up lessons for all grade levels! Click here to see the Math 1 Open Up lessons. 6th graders are exploring rational numbers; 7th graders students are working with probability; and 8th grade working on exponents and scientific notation.

In ELA, students are in their last unit of text studies. 6th grade is reading Hidden Figures, 7th is exploring texts from the Harlem Renaissance, and 8th is reading Maus.

In Social Studies, 6th graders are learning about the Middle Ages, 7th grade is learning about the Cold War, and 8th grade is exploring the mid 20th century.

In Science, 6th graders are in their Earth Science unit, 7th graders are learning about organisms and evolution, and 8th graders are learning about matter and chemistry.

Want to help your student review for their EOGs? Boost their confidence? Practice their test taking strategies? You're in the right place! Each week we will share new strategies and the links to the practice tests. Talk to your students about the strategies and make a habit of completing several questions from the practice tests every night!

Superintendent Oakley needs our help to honor GCS All-Stars, an employee who may not always receive the praise they deserve for the dedication they show to our students and staff. Send an email with the person’s name, job title, location and what makes them an All-Star to goodnews@gcsnc.com or fill out this form. Please also include a video or photo, if possible, to make sure their story gets the social media attention it deserves. A full list of our All-Star submissions will be posted on the GCS website.

Please locate any missing Chromebooks and chargers in advance! We will need them all for EOG testing! Return them to Ms. Shirk in the Media Center as soon as possible!

Families should complete the Transportation Preference Form 2024-2025 if:

• Their family has moved or there has been a change in address for the student.
• Their student has changed schools for 2024-2025 (this will apply to all Swann students!)
• Their student was signed-up for transportation last school year, but never rode the bus or stopped riding the bus.

In May, our focus trait of the month is hope. What does hope mean to you? Talk together about how hope has helped you in yr life. What are some ways you can stay hopeful even in the face of adversity? Why is having hope important?
