WDFY Kick Off!!
Washington Drug-Free Youth (WDFY) is a voluntary program for middle and high school students who commit to a drug-free lifestyle. Members pledge to avoid alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, with random testing as part of their participation. WDFY supports healthy choices through positive activities and peer connections.
Options Program Highlights:
The Options Village is always popping with excitement! Especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays when students come on campus for enrichment classes. One of the classes that has been super fun is Grossology (ewe)! In this class, students dive headfirst into the fascinating (and yes, sometimes gross) world of science. The gooey, the icky, and the downright disgusting captivate the students!
Reminders:
- Make sure your child is signed up for our first field trip, which will happen on October 4th.
- Please, please, please make sure that you are sending a water bottle with your child on Tuesdays and Thursdays when they come for enrichment classes. We do not have a drinking fountain at the Options Village and we are going through way to many paper cups.
We continue to accept students into the Options Program! Feel free to contact one of our team members at (509)796-2701 ext 5 if you have any questions or would like to enroll in our program.
Nutrition Services:
The Nutrition Program is excited to highlight our first Farm to Table Day on October 25th with a potato bar featuring potatoes from the Spokane Hutterite Brethren.

Lunch trays are all set up for the Preschool, TK, and Kindergarten to get them through the line faster. We are working on them carrying their trays. Which can be hard for some of our little students.

Elementary Highlights:
Parents: If you need to change your child’s end-of-day plans, please send a note with them to school. If the office does not receive a note, staff will follow the regular transportation schedule. Additionally, please notify the office of any changes by phone before 1:30 PM. We cannot guarantee that your child will receive the message after 2:00 PM.
Please ensure that your child is supervised by a responsible adult if they are staying after school for practices. Our school does not offer after-school childcare.
If you are interested in volunteering, our Reardan Partners In Education (P.I.E.) group has the following opportunities:
October 11: First Popcorn Friday (held on the 2nd Friday of each month)
October 12: Movie Night in the Commons (held on the 2nd Saturday of each month)
October 19: Trunk or Treat and Carnival (please contact Amanda Wulff or email reardanpie@gmail.com)
Please login to Skyward and update your student's required yearly update forms. This includes the 2024-25 Health registration form that needs to be updated each year for students to be able to attend field trips with the school. This Skyward update will be open only until October 3rd, so please login as soon as possible. If we don't see an update to your child's annual forms, you will receive them in the mail.

Middle School Highlights:
September is National Suicide Awareness Month, and our WDFY students, under the guidance of Darren Mattozzi and Catheryn Logwood, put together a Suicide Awareness and Prevention table at lunch this week. Lots of students visited to learn about the signs and supports to offer when a friend or loved one is struggling. Together we can make our community stronger. Also at lunch this week, HS School Board Representative Kaitlin Butterfield visited the MS students and offered a “cookie for your thoughts” as she took time to talk with students about what is going well at school and what can be improved. Kaitlin and Kelsey Koch–who was visiting HS students at lunch on the same mission–have some next steps to help students navigate congestion in the halls and ideas to improve our weekly Family Connection time on Mondays.
Next week will mark the end of our first month of school, and the MS will be celebrating with a PBIS reward activity on Friday, October 4th in the afternoon. ASB will plan a fun event to celebrate students who have not had any cell phone violations or office referrals. We will also celebrate students nominated for the Character Trait of the Month which is Respect, Students and Athletes of the Week and also draw names out of our MS Pride Card Bucket for prizes. Our goal is to highlight and celebrate all the students who are “doing it right”.
Eighth grade students should have brought home a permission slip for “Unlock Your Future” a hands on opportunity for our students to learn about careers in Manufacturing, Construction, Trades, and Medical Industries on Wednesday, October 2nd. These permission slips must be signed and returned to either Kristy Koch or Tammy O’Rourke (ELA Teachers) by MONDAY, September 30th. Parents–please be sure your child’s health registration form is updated for THIS school year in Skyward. We must have the health information updated in order to take students on this field trip. If you have questions about this, please call the HS office at 796-2701, and Christina will help you get this accomplished.
Students in Mrs. Hamilton’s Family and Consumer Science class completed and presented their Life Maps this week. Mid-Quarter grade reports will be printed on Wednesday, October 2nd and students will bring them home on 10/3. Please take time to check in with your child and discuss progress. We do have after school study table Tuesday-Thursday from 2:45-3:45 pm in the art room. This is a great time for students get caught up and focus on school work with a supportive adult.
We will launch our Clayful coaching app on Monday, October 14th. Please see the flyer for more information. Families are able to opt out of the coaching part of Clayful; please complete the form if you would like to opt out of Clayful coaching. As always, if you have any questions, please contact Principal Newsum by email dnewsum@reardansd.net Thank you for sharing your amazing children with us.
High School Updates:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We would like to remind you that students younger than middle school age, who are staying after school for extracurricular activities, must be supervised by an adult. These students will not be allowed to hang out in the high school or elementary school buildings after school without supervision.
For our middle and high school students who need extra help with academics, we offer an after-school study support program from Monday to Thursday, 3:00 - 4:00 PM.
Additionally, while attending school games and events, parents are responsible for their child’s behavior. If students are not acting appropriately, they will be asked to leave or sit with their parents.
Thank you for helping us maintain a safe and positive environment for all.
Sincerely,
JoLynn Ray
High School Principal

Athletics Highlights:
New focus on Academics for Athletes:
(Grade Checks are done Tuesday Morning)
Level 1 Academic Warning: First Failed Grade Check. If a student’s grade falls below a C- in any class, the student will be put on Academic Warning until the next scheduled grade check. The student may continue to practice and participate in contests and activities. It is highly encouraged that the student checks with teachers to ensure everything is completed.
Level 2 Academic Probation: Second Failed Grade Check. If a student continues to receive a grade below a C- for any class after the second grade check (on the following Tuesday), the student will be put on Academic Probation until the next scheduled grade check. The student will still be eligible to participate in any contests for the entire week. The student will also be eligible to practice with the team for the week. However, the student will be required to attend an after-school studies Monday thru Thursday before going to practice or activity each day during the probationary period.
Level 3 Academic Ineligibility: Third Failed Grade Check. In the event a student still has a grade below a C- for any class after the third grade check (three consecutive weeks), the student will be put on Academic Ineligibility until the grade is brought up to passing. The student will be ineligible to participate in any contests, games, or activities during that period of time. Students will be required to attend after-school studies Monday thru Thursday before going to practice. Students will remain on the team and/or a member of a club or activity, and can become eligible at the next grade check.
Cheerleaders!
The cheerleaders are in full competition mode! They’ve been working so hard to learn their choreography and more advanced skills to get them ready for their first season of WIAA Competition Cheer! We have also learned the importance of attainable goal setting. Each girl picked a personal and a cheer goal to go after this year! These girls have been working through injuries and sickness while juggling school, jobs, and cheer. I’m so proud of them!
