A short note of my concerns and values
Just as I think it is important for each of you to put lesson objectives on the board, I think it is important for me to share some of the key things that are of great importance to me as a building leader. Each school is different with its own sets of strengths and challenges to be addressed.
I believe Central Heights has a culture quite unique to any other school. There is a sense of pride to be a Central Heights Viking. Along with that comes the uniqueness that there is a sense of family among students and staff. This tight-knit culture within our community is envied by the surrounding neighborhoods and schools. I have been impressed by our school spirit at activities and in our school.
With that being said there are three key things I would like to share with you as the values I want to share...lighthouses of key importance if you will:
- Student supervision. Please be with your class at all times. I understand "emergency" situations, or extenuating circumstances (ie. escorting an office referral to the office). But for the most part please stay with your classes. This could be a HUGE liability issue.
- Student Assistance. There should be little doubt to our students that you are there to help them. This does not mean bending over backwards and spoon feeding information. We all know the words we use and the tone in which it was said will send the message to our students. Use time in class to mill around and interact about the assignment. Ask specific questions and provide feedback...redirection or praise!
- Optimism. Love life and teach with PASSION!!! We cannot control home environments, we cannot control what students are dealing with. But we can control our response to each situation and optimism for the future. If we are not optimistic about our class, the team we coach, our interactions with each students, who is going to be?
These are the three things I am going to be paying particular attention to now. I would like to foreshadow as these things become the norm, I want to begin paying particular attention to Bell-to-Bell teaching and increasing academic rigor in a variety of ways.
Energy Bus Rule #6 - Post a Sign that says "No Energy Vampires Allowed" on your bus.
- To be successful, it is important to surround yourself with a positive support team.
- Success is not created in a vacuum; the people we surround ourselves with have a big influence on the life and success we create.
- Energy vampires will suck the life out of you and your goals and vision if you let them.
