Counselor's Corner
Welcome to November Knight Nation!
I was watching an interview recently and heard a very profound statement that I would like to share with you in this edition of Counselor’s Corner.
“The safe place was found when the lights came on.”
Read that again.
When I first heard it, I thought “Wow, that is powerful.” I thought back to when I was younger. Anytime I had to venture outside in the dark, I felt a sense of anxiety and fear creep up in my heart and mind. It wasn’t that I was afraid of the dark. Rather, I was afraid of the unknown that could be hiding in the darkness.
How often is that true for us today? Much of our anxiety and fear can be traced to the unknown that we cannot see. We find ourselves hiding from the dark places because of what may be waiting to pounce on us. Probably not in the physical but more so in the emotional and mental spaces of our lives. Simply, darkness creates an unsafe sense.
However, when we turn on the light everything changes. In the physical, light drives out darkness. What was unseen can now be seen, and now there is safety where fear existed because we illuminated the darkness. When I heard the statement above, I couldn’t help but wonder how many things affect our teenagers' mental and emotional health because we keep them hidden in the dark. We don’t speak about them. We don’t address them. We don’t bring them into the light. Things like bullying, self-image, esteem, even anxieties and depressions all thrive when they are kept in the secrecy of darkness. We become afraid to talk about them and they grow.
The answer to this is to turn on the light. Safe space is found when the issue is revealed. Healing occurs when awareness exists. We can effect change and achieve the goal of healthy mental and emotional teenagers when we become brave enough to flip the switch.
If you find that you are in the darkness and desperately want to find a safe space or to know that someone is ready to help you find that light, that is what I am here for.
Until next time…You Matter!
