It's that spooky time of year when NIGHTMARES are more abundant! Here are a few facts and some ways to decrease the chance of lost sleep due to nightmares.
We all know nightmares are dreams that may be upsetting, scary or strange. They happen during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. During this stage of sleep your brain is working hard, almost as hard as when you are awake. Also, during this stage of deep sleep your body does a lot of repair work to keep you healthy and happy. To read more about sleep stages check out this article - 4 Stages of Sleep: NREM, REM, and the Sleep Cycle (verywellhealth.com) Now back to nightmares! Nightmares will always wake you up, but you can sleep through a bad dream. Nightmares from time to time are normal. Scientist don't know exactly what causes them, but they do know what can trigger them.
- Anxiety and Stress - Worrying about work or school, big life events and life changes such as moving or the death of a loved one can bring on a nightmare.
- Trauma or PTSD - It's common to have nightmares after something traumatic like physical abuse, sexual abuse or an accident.
- Mental Health Conditions - People who suffer from bipolar disorder, depression, generalized anxiety disorder, or schizophrenia are more likely to have nightmares.
- Medications - Certain medications can increase the likelihood of nightmares. Antidepressants, Antimicrobials, Betablockers, blood pressure medications, drugs for Parkinson's Disease, drugs for smoking cessation, and stimulants like Amphetamine and Methylphenidate all are known to increase the occurrence of nightmares.
- Substance Misuse and Withdrawal - For example Opioid Drugs affect parts of your body that regulate sleep. This disruption can increase your chances of having a nightmare.
- Not Sleeping Enough - Lack of quality sleep can trigger a nightmare. Also, a change in your bedtime or wake up time can cause nightmares.
- Eating Right Before Bed - A pre-bedtime snack or meal can speed up your metabolism which can make your brain more active and cause a nightmare.
- Sleep Apnea - Researchers are unsure why this condition increases your risk of nightmares, some think it is the stress that comes with the condition. CPAP therapy can lower your odds.
- SCARY Movies, Books and Games- If you don't enjoy nightmares try to avoid scary movies, books and games right before bed. Who doesn't love a good scary Halloween movie? Try watching that favorite Halloween thriller while it is still daylight 🙂Then try the following strategies to cut your chance of a nightmare!
- *Stick to a sleep schedule and get enough quality rest.
- *Cut out alcohol, caffeine (🙁), and cigarettes.
- *Workout earlier in the day.
- *Relax before you fall asleep - take a warm bath, read a nice rom com, talk do your kiddos or read them a favorite happy story.
- *Steer clear of those frightening movies, games, shows and books!
I hope you all have a wonderful week! Nurse Smith 🙂
