Leaders are Readers!
At LPLS, we emphasize the importance of daily reading with our students, encouraging both purpose-driven learning and the joy of reading for pleasure. In the classroom, students read to explore new concepts and hone their comprehension skills, while outside of class, they enjoy self-selected library books to foster a love for reading.
For our early risers, from 7:15 to 7:30 AM, students have dedicated time to read their library books or any books they bring from home. This is just one of the ways we support and encourage reading at LPLS. Additionally, our students can use Istation to strengthen their reading skills, both in school and at home.
Right now, our 3rd grade students are participating in an exciting citywide reading competition, the NCAA Read to the Final Four. Each student tracks their weekly reading minutes, competing with other 3rd graders across the city. It's wonderful to see our leaders so engaged in their reading!
If you're looking to add to your home library, please reach out to the school. We'd be happy to provide books for your child to take home for the Winter break. Let's keep the reading momentum going! Thank you families for sending us your very best and choosing LPLS!
Paws Up!

Teaching and Learning the IB Way
Building a Community of Readers
While our 3rd grade leaders are engaged in the citywide Read to the Final Four reading challenge, our other leaders are also working hard on their own reading goals. As all our leaders work on their goals and as we prepare for the Winter Break, we want to remind our families that leaders read for a variety of reasons and can read in a variety of ways. For example, some of our 2nd grade leaders were learning about Wilma Rudolph and how she worked to overcome different obstacles in her life to win several Olympic medals. Students were able to read from their textbook or log into their iPad to read online. Students were reading to gather and learn new information and they were reading from a book, online, or having the text read to them. That's reading for a reason and in different ways!
As we prepare for the Winter Break, we encourage you to find different reasons to read. Your leader can read directions to a new game or toy, read to follow a family recipe, or read the lyrics to a favorite song. Reading can also look differently. Some leaders might read to a sibling, a plushie, or a pet. They might even listen to a holiday song to determine the meaning. Other leaders might prefer being read to. All of those are ways our leaders can be PRINCIPLED and make time to continue reading over the Winter Break! And, if you need books, don't hesitate to contact our campus.
Sharing Traditions with our Peers & Making IB Connections
As an Primary Years IB world school, our leaders engage in thematic learning around six global themes. One of those themes is Where We Are in Place and Time. Currently, our 1st grade leaders are working on their culminating project for their unit on Where We Are in Place and Time by learning about different Winter traditions. Leaders learned how making hot chocolate with family is one of the Winter traditions our 1st grade teachers had growing up. Our leaders learned how that tradition has been carried on throughout the years. You see, sometimes our traditions change over time and that's okay.
Throughout the week, leaders will be asking their families about different traditions they have and writing about it. What makes this learning even more special for our leaders is that they will have an opportunity to share those traditions with their peers! Leaders will get to learn from family at home and from their friends at school. Finally, our leaders will get to explore different Winter traditions that take place all over the world. Understanding how traditions began and how they continue to be celebrated is a neat way that our leaders are exploring the theme of Where We Are in Place and Time!
