Decatur community,
October arrived this past week and brought the beautiful, mild weather that I have been waiting for since my arrival last June. Along with it, decorations began to shoot up throughout the school and town, and here at DCHS, we saw success stories both individually and athletically.
Throw in an amazing car show in the middle of downtown, and "OctOberlin (anyone trademarked that yet) Fest" has begun.
SHOUTOUTS
Shoutout to 8th grade student Harley Barnes. Harley was chosen to participate in the NWKMEA Junior High Honor Band in November. It's a great honor, and I know Harley will represent Oberlin well.
Shoutout to our substitute teachers. Coming from a school that had over 600 students in grades 9-12, I was really worried when I came to western Kansas that there would be a shortage of subs. There were 4 subs that I had to choose from at my last school. I have been so impressed by the amount and quality of our subs her in Oberlin. Rhonda Barth, Mirla Coleman, Pat Dorhorst, Betsy Haag, Marianne Larue, Susan Nelson, Matt Nyland, Kathryn Tremblay, Jeanie Unger, Terri Woolsey, and Brad Weese have all been in our building at least once this year, and they have done an amazing job. It has been a huge relief to have such a committed and helpful bunch of subs.
Shoutout to our maintenance staff here at DCHS. Kenny Black, Jack Farr, Renee Harman, Wade Juenemann, and Delbert Russ. Last Sunday was Custodial Appreciation Day. These employees each work very hard to ensure that DCHS is ready to go for each day of school and all of the many activities that we host.
Shoutout to our high school football team for a big win in Stockton. Though it has been a challenging year, there has never been any question about the effort that the coaches and players have put in. On Friday, there were great plays on offense and defense, and the coaches called a great game.
Shoutout to Mrs. Melissa Dreher and Mrs. Brenda Breth for bringing a gift for decorating that I personally lack. Their offices have been converted to a fall look, and if you are ever up early or out late, take a look at the owl eyes in Mrs. Breth's top floor classroom.
Shoutout to Ms. Libby Fort and the Cheerleaders that were at the game on Friday night. It was cold on Friday night, but they cheered before, during, and after the game. Great spirit.
Shoutout to Agricultural teacher Jason Ketterl. Mr. Ketterl has given his students so many experiences this year. Competitions, field trips, and even a lock in: Mr. Ketterl is giving his students a lot of opportunities and consistently looks for more.
Shoutout to a caring, supportive staff that knows their students very well. This past Wednesday afternoon all of the teachers met during the Early Release time. The sole purpose was to discuss students and share with each other what they know about them. I was genuinely impressed with the depth of consideration and knowledge that was given to each student. There was not a single student that was not discussed, and the benefit of hearing from so many perspectives was powerful.
