A Message from the Superintendent
Happy National Hispanic Heritage Month!
As we enter the month of October, I am so excited to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with our ACPS community. From arts and culture to science, education and beyond, the influence of this culture is woven throughout our society. This month is an opportunity for us to reflect on the rich diversity that strengthens our schools and inspires our students and staff every day.
Hispanic Heritage Month is not just about celebrating the past; it is about recognizing the ongoing impact of Hispanic and Latino cultures today. Our schools are enriched by students and families who share traditions, stories and languages that broaden our collective understanding of the world. From classroom lessons to community events, we are committed to creating learning environments where all students feel seen, valued and celebrated for who they are.
This celebration aligns perfectly with our district’s commitment to affirming and empowering all cultures within ACPS. As we mark this important month, let us continue to build bridges of understanding and ensure that every student feels a deep sense of belonging. I encourage you to participate in the various activities and events we have planned, both in and outside of the classroom, to learn more about the incredible legacy and ongoing contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.
Sincerely,
Matthew S. Haas
Superintendent

Foundation Focus
With the school year off to a great start, the Albemarle Foundation for Education (AFE) has some exciting news to share! For years, Families Helping Families (FHF) has worked to transform the lives of ACPS families with comprehensive services including transportation, housing assistance, snack closets in schools and mental health and wellness support. They are now taking the next step in their evolution by transitioning from a 501c3 non-profit to a legacy fund, which will be housed with us at the AFE. This is a unique opportunity for a new chapter in expanding on the shared goals of FHF and the AFE of ensuring accessibility for all students and removing barriers to educational success. We at the AFE are honored FHF chose us to grow and enhance their legacy.
And, as we at AFE continue on our mission to help provide the necessary resources to ensure all ACPS students are given the opportunity to thrive and succeed, are thrilled to announce a partnership with Communities in Schools (CIS). CIS is an established national organization that is locally focused and aligns with our mission. Their model is data-driven, innovative and has been proven effective. We are currently beginning the implementation of the CIS programs at Greer and Red Hill elementary schools, Journey Middle School and Albemarle High School, with the hiring of Site Coordinators who are trained to lead comprehensive needs assessments which, in turn, will drive goal setting and operating plans tailored specifically to each of those schools.
As the program launches and becomes embedded in our schools, we look forward to sharing additional information and are confident we’ll have many success stories to tell. Until then, we wish all of our ACPS students, families and supporters a fruitful fall season and a terrific school year.
Sincerely,
The Albemarle Foundation for Education Board
