CEDARMERE ES CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Celebrating Black History Month at Cedarmere ES
Each February, our school comes together to celebrate Black History Month, a time to recognize and honor the contributions and achievements of Black individuals throughout history. In elementary school, this month serves as an important opportunity for our students to learn about diverse leaders, artists, innovators, and activists who have shaped our world. By exploring stories of resilience, creativity, and justice, we encourage our students to embrace diversity, foster inclusion, and understand the value of different perspectives. Through this celebration, we hope to inspire all our students to be proud of their own heritage and to recognize the importance of equality, kindness, and respect for all

Reminder for Families: Inclement Weather and Virtual Learning Expectations
As we prepare for the possibility of inclement weather in the coming days, please note that BCPS will continue with instruction virtually. Our fifth-grade students may remember what virtual learning was like, but for many of our younger students, this will be a new experience. They might not fully understand that virtual learning is still a form of learning that requires their full attention and focus.
We kindly ask you to remind your child that during virtual learning, the expectations are the same as when they are in the classroom. This means no social time with peers or inappropriate behavior online. Students should treat virtual learning sessions with the same respect, focus, and responsibility as in-person instruction.
Please review the following tips and reminders to help your child stay on track:
Thank you for your support and partnership!
- In order to allow time for students to adjust, log in and access resources on an inclement weather virtual learning day, all instruction will begin two hours later than the school’s normal schedule. (@10:15 am)
- There will be a minimum of four hours of synchronous instruction. (Live Instruction)
- Teachers will take attendance and there will be opportunities for students to make up work missed during the virtual learning day if they are unable to connect.
In case your child needs to be absent, kindly provide a note—whether handwritten or through email. Submitting written documentation helps us keep accurate records. Remember, not all absences are considered lawful. Let's make every school day count!
Our current percentage for our school is 92%!!! WE CAN DO THIS!!!
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF OUR 4TH AND 5TH GRADE HONOR ROLL STUDENTS
Last year, Cedarmere Elementary School introduced our first Achievement Assembly to celebrate the accomplishments of our 4th and 5th-grade students. We recognized those who excelled in academic achievement, attendance, and personal improvement. This event provided an opportunity for students to be honored alongside their friends and families for their hard work. The assembly was so well-received that it has continued this year, with plans to hold it each quarter. Our goal is to foster a spirit of academic excellence and strengthen the support we receive from our parents.
The categories of recognition included:
- Principal's Honor Roll: All A’s in every subject area
- Academic Achievement Honor Roll: All A’s and B’s in every subject area
- Excellent Attendance: 100% attendance with no significant tardies
- Most Improved Student: A student who shows remarkable improvement during the quarter (selected by their teacher)
Each quarter, students received invitations to the assembly along with their report cards, encouraging their families to join us in celebrating their success.
Best Digital Life for Your Child
BEST Digital Life Parent Tip
Digital media – cell phones, computers, social media, television – can have a big impact on children. But parents have a bigger influence. The American Academy of Pediatrics encourages parents to make sure that their children are healthy in this digital world by helping them find a balance between digital media (screen time”) and healthy practices like sleep (children need 8-12 hours each night, depending on their age), physical activity (children need 1 hour a day), and “in person” time with family and friends. The AAP provides a helpful table about recommended times for screen time by age. Parents are also encouraged to develop a Family Tech Planner using the screen time guidelines and their family’s values and schedule. Parents can also create a Family Social Media Plan, which can help minimize conflict, support good choices, and address misuse.

Non-Food Celebration ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENT IDEAS Parent Ideas
Dear CES Families,
We understand that many families wish to celebrate special occasions, such as birthdays, with treats. However, to ensure the safety and well-being of all students—especially those with allergies—we kindly ask that you refrain from providing any sweet or edible items in the classroom.
Instead, we encourage you to consider non-edible fun items that all students can enjoy together. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in helping us create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone!
Non-Food Celebration and Reward Ideas ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENT IDEAS Parent Ideas—
- Give small favor bags (pencils, stickers, glow sticks, erasers, notepads, etc.). •
- Donate a book to the class and schedule a time to read it to them. •
- Donate classroom supplies (books, games, musical items). •
- Provide supplies and directions for a craft (bonus if parents come to class to help with the craft). •
- Donate recess items (balls, hula hoops, etc.) to the class in the student’s honor. •
- Coordinate a book swap – students bring in a book to “trade” with classmates. •
- Create a treasure box with donations of non-food items for students to choose from as a reward.
