Superintendent Neal's
March 2022 Newsletter
Happy March
Dear Families and Staff,
During this season of growth and transformation as we enter spring this month, I want to commend our team of educators for their constant dedication to every students’ well-being.
I would also like to thank our students for continuing to work and study hard as we are nearing a month into the second semester of the 2022-2023 school year.
I am inspired by the many success stories coming out of our schools, from our students being accepted to universities across the state and around the country, to our hardworking staff members being recognized for simply doing what they love to do – supporting and guiding our kids as they prepare for their futures.
It is a joy to see the depths of what our students can accomplish, and it is a great reflection of the role our schools, teachers, staff and administrators have played to drive their achievements. We greatly appreciate the support of our Eatonville School District community and its commitment to working together with our staff to ensure our students' success.
Wishing you the best,
Gary Neal

Meet our new Elementary Mental Health Counselor
My name is Ms. Elle and I have the privilege to be the Eatonville School District Elementary Mental Health Therapist! I will be heading to the three elementary schools: Weyerhaeuser Elementary School, Eatonville Elementary School and Columbia Crest Academy.
I have a background in psychology, human development, social work and various forms of behavioral modification intervention (ABA). This wide variety of knowledge creates an open mind full of ideas to create best practice for kiddos, along with the educational background to create a solution focused environment. With that, I am both excited and eager to work collaboratively with parents. If you have any concerns and would like me to meet with your student please don't hesitate to contact me at e.gladstone@eatonvilleschools.org
I look forward to meeting your awesome kiddos!

Highly Capable Program Highlight
February Highlight
This month elementary had two themed Highly Capable days. The first session was a Valentine's theme. We practiced data collection and different math calculations (like mean, median, etc.) with a sweetheart candy stacking challenge. We also learned about prepositions with a hands-on activity with Cupid and paper airplanes.
It's always a good day when we get to hike down to Sahara Creek and in our first session we escaped outside to check our water testing site for the Nisqually River Education Project (NREP). In the afternoon, students worked on their posters and "pitch" for their passion project. We began finalizing our ideas and making our goals and timelines.
For the second elementary session, we did a Winter Olympics day. Students were split into teams and created their own countries and flags that represented their groups. Then, teams competed in engineering challenges based on Olympic events like speed skating to learn about center of gravity and bobsledding to test drag on different bobsled teams. In the afternoon students worked on the last part of preparing their passion project presentations and finished the day with choice time.
In our one middle school session, we spent the morning hiking to the Nisqually River and Sahara Creek and collecting water samples and other data. We went back to the makerspace and tested our samples to ensure our testing sites were healthy. We will report our data to the NREP to help them plan future watershed clean up projects. In the afternoon, students presented their pitches and posters for their passion projects. Kids were engaged and asked insightful questions to help each other find areas that needed work and expressed shared interest in ideas.

Positive Post, Bodie Turner
Eatonville High School freshman, Bodie Turner, is actually a professional athlete. Bodie has competed in Archery at a very high level since he was a toddler. Now, at the age of 15, he is considered one of the best on the planet.
Bodie recently traveled to the Lancaster Classic Tournament in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. While there, he is one of only three professional archers that has shot a perfect 660/660 in the 19-year history of the Lancaster Classic. That means Bodie hit the center X ring 60 times in a row from a distance of 20 yards. The X ring is just slightly smaller than a nickel. His targets are now framed at Lancaster Archery Supply next to the targets of the other two amazing archers.
From Lancaster, Bodie and his family traveled to Las Vegas to the largest indoor archery tournament in the world, The Vegas Shoot. In Vegas, Bodie officially received his Pro credentials and shot a 900/900 with 84/90 X ring hits. The goal of 211 professional archers was to hit a 900 out of 900. This score moved him on to the “The Big Show.” The shoot off in The Vegas Shoot is considered the highest stress event in the archery world.
When the arrows stopped flying, Bodie Turner was the victor in the Championship Compound Open class. Bodie outshot 22 other adult male professional archers in the shoot off to win over $71,000. The future of this Columbia Crest Alumni is bright, to say the least.
Incredible work, Bodie Turner
