Rāmere Friday 4th November Whiringa-ā-rangi 2022 (T4:W3/8)
Our Tumuaki / Principal
Updates and developments to share with you this week include the following...
A Full Week: We have had a full week for the school on a range of fronts. Monday was our Southand Athletics Qualifiers event followed by a Home and School Meeting in the evening. Tuesday was Pet Day and our School Board meeting was in the evening. Wednesday night I attended the Wyndham Lions Club meeting as they very kindly donated $4000 to the school. We hope to use this on our concreting project with the path to the pool being extended to its new dimensions. Thursday afternoon we held our Preparation for School meeting for families due to start in the coming year. Friday was our fortnightly Celebration Time. On top of that throughout the whole week, we have been swimming and the office space is coming along with decorators in now for painting and wall linings. It takes a lot to run a school and there are so many people, in so many ways, who have contributed to this during this week. Thank you.
End-of-Year Concert: We are excited this year to be able to put on our end-of-year concert for the school community face to face. It is going to be on Thursday the 8th of December. We will do a matinee show and an evening performance. The theme is "That's So Last Century!". It should be fun.
Year Six Prize Giving: We enjoyed the adjustments that occurred last year and will roll out a very similar prize-giving structure for Year Sixes (but with all invited guests being present) on Friday the 9th of December. Most of the awards will be presented at this event with the main trophies being presented at the Evening Concert the evening before.
To Give Away: We have a few items surplus to our requirements that we have put in the bike-shed near the west driveway gate. Help yourself.
Acknowledging - Team Edendale
- Caroline Blackmore: We are so grateful to the Home and School for supporting our Team Kea students with funding that enables us to employ Caroline Blackmore. Caroline has such a positive and warm personality that our young children love. She is an integral part of the Team Kea team, ensuring that our young children get the best start that we can give them. Thanks Caroline for your input into the lives of our children.
- Pet Day Committee: A big thank you from staff, children and parents to the Pet Day Committee for their community-focused efforts in putting on Pet Day on Tuesday. It was an enjoyable day for all. Well done.

Our Team of the Week - Team Kereru
Team Kereru has had a busy week this week.
Monday was athletics. It was awesome to see all the children putting their best effort forward with all of the events they participated in. We were lucky to have such a lovely day for athletics to go ahead.
Tuesday was Pet Day. This year’s Pet Day was the first pet day I have been to with Edendale School and it had been a two years wait for the children also. It was wonderful to see children putting in entries for multiple different sections. Meeting everyone's pet was fun!
Team Kereru have started swimming this week to get ready for LMV Swimming Sports. Mrs Shepherd took the class yesterday practising freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke.
In writing we are creating a piece of narrative writing based on an image of a moving swing. The children can take the story wherever they want, as long as it has a beginning, middle, and end. The story needs to have a problem and solution. The children have used planning sheets to help them put their ideas down and to recognise how planning can help them in their writing. It will be great to read them when they are completed as each child will have their own unique piece of writing. Also, to start off the term, each student thought of a SMART writing goal that they can try to achieve or improve on by the end of the term.
With DRIVE this term, we have started to look at a variety of historical events that have had an impact on us today. The children created an awesome brainstorm. The children then have to create a digital presentation based on one specific event, making sure they include who, what, when, where, and how.
We have a busy few weeks coming up with the visit to Kamahi Reserve next Thursday and the Thursday after, we have the Year 5 Big Day Out in Invercargill.
We are starting to get into concert practice this week.
The term will fly by and before we know it, it will be Week 8.
Have a lovely weekend!
Character Values Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L): Term Four Integrity Ponotanga
Integrity means we behave to a high standard of character everywhere we are and is shown through honesty, truthfulness, accuracy, consistent behaviour, selflessness and self-discipline. We demonstrate it when we...
Are honest and trustworthy.
Do the right thing even when no one is looking.
Make positive choices that we are proud of.
This week's Principal's Values Award goes to: Erin Wallis
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kiwi
Koby is Team Kiwi’s MVP for Ponotanga - Integrity.
Koby is a kind and cheerful class member who greets his teachers and his peers every morning. He knows our morning routine and sets about to do what is required of him.
Koby has a positive attitude towards his school work and our class activities. He is able to work independently and is always willing to try new things. On the mat, Koby displays great mat manners and is usually one of the first students with his hand up ready to answer a question or contribute to a class discussion.
Koby makes positive choices that help him be a great learner and a valued class member. He is honest and trustworthy.
You have had a great year in Team Kiwi, Koby! You have been an awesome role model and we are lucky to have had you in Team Kiwi this year!
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Tui
Ella is Team Tui’s MVP for Ponotanga - Integrity.
Integrity is about making the right choices at the right time and Ella is a super example of a young lady who can be trusted to be doing the right thing even when no-one is looking.
Ella is a super duper helper in the mornings, especially on Mondays with sorting out other children’s homework with me. She knows the routines and rules of our classroom and school, and she follows them to a very high standard.
Ella is liked by all her classmates as she is honest, kind and is someone you can have a good laugh with. She definitely has a few jokes up her sleeve.
Recently Ella has shown great sportsmanship inside and outside the classroom, encouraging and cheering her peers with positive words. She is not only proud of her own achievements, but others' achievements too.
Ella, we are lucky to have a hard-working, bubbly. reliable student like you in Team Tui.
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kahu

Fleur’s honesty and trustworthiness are evident at all times, both inside and outside of the classroom and she shows that integrity means doing the right thing, even if no one is watching.
Fleur stands up for what she believes is right and supports those around her.
Fleur actively participates in all classroom activities and produces work that she is proud of. She completes her work by staying on task and making sure it is finished in a timely manner.
She asks for or offers to help when needed.
Fleur shows respect to all those around her. She actively listens to adults and classmates alike and gives constructive feedback to her classmates during sharing time.
Fleur, we are very happy and proud to have you as a member of Team Kahu. You are a wonderful role model and you should be proud of the choices you make.
Writer of the Week - Poppy Davey-Hubbard, Team Kereru
The Swing
Esther went to the park with her family on a sunny day. She loved to go back and forth on the swing. She loved going high in the sky. It made her feel excited, flying like a butterfly in the air.
Her parents pushed her. She yelled, "Higher. Higher!"
Esther heard her mum's phone ring. It was work. They wanted to know if she could work the next day. Her dad stopped pushing her. He saw a black, thundery rain cloud.
With her parents distracted, Esther was too. A stray dog ran past. She jumped off the swing at a low height and chased after the dog.
Mum got off the call and her dad turned around and Esther was not there. They could see her running off in the distance but Esther and the dog were too fast. Mum and Dad went to the car to chase her.
Shortly after they got to the car they lost sight of her. They revved the car and went looking.
Esther caught up with the dog and gave it a nice hug.
Around the corner came mum and dad feeling very relieved to see Esther. They picked up Esther and noticed the dog was puffing so they gave it some water in a bowl.
The rain started and the parents wanted to go but Esther did not want to leave without the dog. So, Mum and Dad picked the dog up and headed back to their house planning to take the dog to the Dog Shelter the next day.
Our Kaitiaki School Board
Meeting Report - Tuesday 1st November
The new School Board met for their second time on Tuesday, being the seventh School Board meeting for the year.
The meeting started with a tour through the school that helped the new board learn some of the history of the property work undertaken by previous School Boards. There certainly has been a lot done by the efforts of many of our previous Boards - the TBLC, disability toilet block off the admin area, an extended staffroom, the junior verandah, the senior verandah, a new netball court, a new tennis/basketball court, a new car parking area, an administration block remodel, extended playing space, concrete upgrades, upgraded drainage, new fencing.
Then, this School Board will see the completion of the Learning Support Coordinators Office (in the administration block with a new principal's office), a new boiler, a new pool roof and some classroom modifications to Rooms One and Two to install a sliding door between the two of them.
The meeting then proceeded on to the agenda items for that day that included:
- Our roll is 131 children today.
- A report on the whole school's achievement in reading by Mrs Jenny Coyle. The school is exploring Structured Literacy as a means to support learners to develop greater skills and confidence in reading especially in their earlier years.
- A report on the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) results compiled by Mrs Jenny Coyle. This detailed the tracking of gender, what and when associated with misdemeanours and how this is being managed by staff. We have, on the whole, a very good school of children who do so well to get along across a day, week, term and year of being together.
- The principal presented two reports in regard to progress against the Annual Plan and Compliance Report.
- The funding and staffing allocations by the Ministry of Education for our school into 2023 were tabled.
- A draft 2023 budget, Annual Plan and Strategic Plan were tabled for input and questions with the hope that all three will be confirmed in Meeting Eight.
- Solutions and Services, the school's accountant, provided several reports in relation to the financial transactions as of September and the position that the school is in financially as a whole.
The School Board's next and final meeting for 2022 is on Tuesday 29th of November, starting at 7.00 pm in the staffroom.
