Weekly Update
Weekly Update for the Week of November 4, 2024
Top 5 things to know for the week ahead
1. No school tomorrow!
Tomorrow, November 5th, is Election Day. All Schools are closed for students, as many of them are used for polling places.
Did you know that only 40 of our 46 Presidents have been elected through election process?
59 elections have been held since 1789, and 40 of the 46 presidents have been elected this way. We use the electoral college system, giving each state a specific number of "electors" based on the population of the area. Those electors will vote for their preferred candidate, the candidate that receives the most votes for the area for their state. There are a total of 538 electoral votes available, making 270 needed number to win the election.
If no candidate secures a majority of electoral votes, the House of Representatives (Congress) then chooses the winner, however this has only happened twice (1800 and 1824).
In 1876, 1888, 2000 and 2016 the most popular candidate nationwide did not win the election, because while they may have won through more overall votes across the country, they did not win enough electoral college votes.
When voting first started, only males white property owners could vote. By 1856, the voting expanded to all white males. In 1920, white women were allowed to vote. And in 1965, Blacks were allowed to right through the Voting Rights Bill a bill signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
2. Monthly Focus: Boosting Academic Skills & Motivation
As a high schooler at home you may face some challenges such as overcoming distractions or maintaining engagement in your Google Meets. Being online can amplify any of your obstacles, as students may struggle with self-discipline and staying motivated without the structure of a traditional classroom setting.
In November, we will focus on one way you can boost your academic skills and stay motivated.
We talked about it before but creating an effective learning environment is critical.
Having a dedicated study space is important as it provides a designated area free from distractions at home, allowing you to attend class and focus on your assignments. Also, make sure to minimize distractions by keeping electronics away, ensure comfortable seating, and prioritize good lighting to reduce eye strain and improve concentration.
Furthermore, set up a routine to establish a structured schedule that balances your academic responsibilities with your other activities including taking breaks.
3. Fall Popcorn Festival
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our fantastic Fall Popcorn Festival. I didn't get many pictures during the event as we were busying engaging with each other. But did manage to get a picture of the popcorn bar right before we opened the popcorn flavors.
We will host our next in-person event in February with a Chocolate theme.
4. Report Cards!
This week your report cards will be available on the Home Access Center. If you and/or your parent/guardian do not have access to the Home Access Center, please contact your home school office. Unfortunately, we do not have that information.
