2025 AK STAR and Alaska Science Assessment
Each spring, Alaskan students are provided an opportunity to show what they know. When students show what they know, teachers and parents can partner to promote student success. The State of Alaska Department of Education has partnered with NWEA to align and connect the English language arts (ELA) and mathematics tests with the MAP Growth benchmark assessments students take in fall and winter.
This balanced assessment system targets instruction to better support meeting students’ individual learning needs. In addition, students will take only one assessment per content area (ELA and math) and be provided two scores as follows:
Summative assessment result at grade-level
MAP Growth interim benchmark result, including growth from fall to spring
AK STAR, the Alaska System of Academic Readiness, is comprised of English language arts and mathematics and is administered to students in grades 3-9. The Alaska Science Assessment is administered to students in grades 5, 8 and 10. The purpose of a large-scale, summative assessment is to provide parents and schools an overall picture of a student’s progress in meeting the Alaska standards at grade level.
Parents can locate resources for AK STAR and the Alaska Science Assessment, including directions for Student Readiness (Practice Tests and Tutorials), student testing times and general assessment information on the ASD website at https://www.asdk12.org/akstar.
Parents can also help by ensuring their children are well rested, eat a nutritious breakfast, and are at school on time for the days of testing. Please avoid scheduling appointments on your child’s testing days.
The ASD AK STAR and Alaska Science Assessment testing window allows for school assessment scheduling flexibility. Students! Get ready to show what you know during our school’s AK STAR and Alaska Science Assessment testing dates:

Student Readiness - AK STAR and Alaska Science Assessment
The Student Readiness resources – Student Tutorials, Practice Tests, and Educator Guides to Student Readiness – are available for schools, students, and families. Practice tests are available to anyone with the link, both at school and home, and provide an opportunity to practice both platforms, including using Universal Tools and text-to-speech.
- The Quick Sheet provides links to Practice Tests, Tutorials, Assessment Design, and all readiness resources – please share with families.
- NOTE: All Tutorials for both AK STAR and the Alaska Science Assessment are housed on Vimeo. Vimeo is not allowed on any ASD device. The State is developing a workaround.
Spring Picture Day is April 8th
Lost and Found
Our lost and found is overflowing with items. Please have your student check for anything they may be missing before March 7th. Over Spring Break what is left over will be donated.
Student Safety
Remember that the speed limit in our parking lot is 5 MPH. Please do not park on the crosswalk as the students have to walk in the road to get to the building. Thank you all for keeping our students safe!

Girls on the Run is a 10-week program for girls in grades 3-5 that combines physical activity with valuable life skills. The program meets twice a week and uses fun, movement-based lessons to help girls:
- Build confidence and develop essential life skills
- Set and achieve goals, with the celebration of a 5K event at the end of the season
- Make a positive impact on their community
- Practice empathy, inclusion, and acceptance
Now, more than ever, girls need a program that helps them build strong relationships, express their emotions, and feel supported. Girls on the Run provides the tools they need to stand up for themselves and others while becoming confident leaders in their communities.

PTA Update
Hello Rogers Park PTA Families,
Thanks again to our amazing and generous community for your support of the Glow on Ice Event last month. We will soon have information on the amount fundraised once we finalize our expenses. Thanks to the patience of those who have waited on t-shirt orders. We do hope to do another round of Wolf Pack shirt printing this school year! We are so appreciative of all of our donors and volunteers who keep our programs running smoothly and impact our school community. We want to shout out especially to the energetic Brittany Ford, our Volunteer Coordinator who has been instrumental to our recess ice-skating program and the numerous volunteers who tie skates, Kate Blank, our tireless treasurer and yearbook volunteer (you may have seen her snapping pics at our family events) and to our outstanding Science Fair Committee members Anjali Madeira, Kim Hays and Alison Kwan (who is also our fabulous web designer and tech support). We thrive because of a remarkable community of volunteers.
Here are some ways PTA is supporting our school this month and next:
- Purchasing a much-needed new cot for the Nurse's Office to provide a safe and comfortable environment for students to rest/recover/receive treatment.
- Providing a staff meal during Parent Teacher Conferences (PTC) for our very hardworking Rogers Park Staff.
- Implementing another round of "Sweets & Drinks" family-provided potluck for staff during PTC (this was a huge hit this fall - stay tuned for sign up info.)
- Hosting the Read Across America breakfast before school on Thursday, March 6th (details and volunteer/donation opportunities to be announced soon.)
- Facilitating a parent advocacy training with our VP-Legislative Liaison, Kim Hays, adjacent to our next membership meeting (note there is a potential meeting date/time change to accommodate this training, to be announced ASAP.)
- Supporting our young scientists with Science Fair project preparation and materials as they ready for the school-wide Science Fair on Thursday, March 20th.
- Hosting an evening family event in March, details TBD. If you are interested in volunteering or helping with this event or in any other capacity, please reach out via email to rogers.park.pta@gmail.com.
. We thank you for your continued generosity and support of our PTA and school.
