Westernport Elementary "Sprouts"
Fourth-grade students at Westernport Elementary piloted the Master Gardener Sprouts Program, which teaches concepts similar to those taught in the Master Gardener training program: Soil Science, Botany, Entomology, Ecology, and Native Plants. Students sowed native plant seeds, created models of flowers and soil layers, made food webs, and got an up-close view of insects! Students learned about many environmental education topics that will provide background knowledge in preparation for further learning during their ACPS Outdoor School experience in the fall.
Lunchtime Food Gardening Series In Person or Virtual
Join Ashely Bodkins and Sarah Llewellyn, Master Gardener Coordinators, and take your lunch break and learn how to grow a garden in 2025! This series is mainly aimed at beginner gardeners, but anyone who wants to learn more about the topics is encouraged to register. Attend in person at the University of Maryland Extension Office in Garrett County, join virtually during the live session, or watch the recorded lesson. An option to meet everyone's desire! Free gardening incentives at every class! Register HERE.
Overcoming Barriers As a Team
Dr. Ketterman, our FCS Financial Wellness Educator, recently worked with Phil to obtain his social security card, birth certificate, and ID card. Navigating through obstacles, such as limited access to transportation, technology, or other needs, can prove challenging in obtaining essential identification documents. Dr. Ketterman worked alongside Phil to leverage partnerships with multiple agencies to achieve these goals.
Let's Make a "Soil Salad"!
Our SNAP-Ed educators have been busy bringing lessons to the 3rd graders of Allegany County elementary schools this month. Growing Healthy Habits is a SNAP-Ed curriculum that focuses on the best practices of gardening. Students learned about the makeup and importance of soil in the growing process and then assisted in mixing a "Soil Salad" for a healthy SNAP-Ed "Tasting." You can even try out the "Soil Salad" recipe for yourself at home by clicking the following link: SNAP- Ed Soil Salad Receipe.

Congratulations on a Job Well Done!
REACT (Robotics and Engineering in Allegany County, Together) was recently awarded the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Outstanding Qualifier Award for the state of Maryland. This award recognizes the tournament's excellent planning and preparation, the event volunteers' dedication and enthusiasm, and the coaches' passion and commitment. Allegany County 4-H is a proud partner of REACT, our community's youth robotics non-profit organization. Many of our 4-H volunteers are also FLL coaches, many of our 4-H members also participate in FLL, and our Extension faculty and staff shared their time and expertise to assist with the qualifier. Jessica Mellon, 4-H Educator and founding member of REACT, said, "I was thrilled when I received notification of the award. Our robotics community is deeply committed to making a difference in kids' lives through youth robotics, and for that to be recognized at the state level means a lot."
Our Allegany County 4-H robotics program teaches six hours of introductory LEGO robotics to all third-graders in Allegany County Public Schools. We've included a copy of the 4-H Educator Letter sent to the third-grade parents each year. These STEM activities engage students' curiosity and empower their learning, with the option to participate in robotics camps and robotics teams. This program was strategically developed to increase youth robotics access and participation in our community.
