Heroes Week
Big Blue Summer Week 4
Staff Highlight of the Week: Nature Rachel- Speciality teacher
Rachel joined us this summer after teaching elementary school students during the school year. Part of our new mission this summer is to explore the world around us and Rachel helps campers achieve this in nature studies. From our youngest campers to our oldest she teaches campers about helping eliminate pollution and getting the most out of what nature has to offer. "I love working with the kids, it is the highlight of my summer," says Rachel.
C - Curiosity- Ninja Warrior Hero Challenge
Ninja Warrior Hero Challenge: Big Blue Summer C.I.T.s (Counselors in Training) get the opportunity each week to showcase their developing counselor skills. This week’s C.I.Ts were in charge of adding creative obstacles and challenges to raise the difficulty level of our new Ninja Warrior course to “hero.” C.I.T.s spent afternoons brainstorming and mapping their course... and then did some quick thinking to adjust for the rain. Each bunk elected a counselor to run the course under a superhero alias on Friday afternoon. The C.I.T.’s efforts sparked campers’ imaginations and excitement as they cheered their favorite heroes through the course!
O - Openness- Nature's Paint Brush
Nature’s Paintbrush: In Nature Studies campers learn the importance of their surroundings and the resources it can provide. Leaves were focal point for the week. Exploring the textures of different types of leaves, campers made their own personal leaf paint brushes and used natural colors to become one with both nature and art. Campers went home with the knowledge of the importance of leaves to trees and to the atmosphere around us, while also tuning in with their artistic natures. Natural tools open our minds to developing the knowledge of how things work.
D - Dedication- Lacrosse Skills and Drills
Lacrosse Skills and Drills: Big Blue Summer sports rotations give our campers the opportunity to discover new activities, sparking interests that can grow into talents with dedicated effort. Our sports rotations are led by Pingry Strength and Conditioning Coach Michael Saraceno and Pingry multi-sport coach Kevin Guevara, who introduced campers to lacrosse this week. Passing and catching with a lacrosse stick was new for many, and mastering these skills took some focus and patience. Sports rotations give campers the opportunity to explore their competitive drive and harness their athletic dedication.
E - Enthusiasm- A Challenge To Escape
A Challenge To Escape: Campers turned detectives this week to free specialty counselor Kari S. from “The Escape Room.” Campers enthusiastically took on the role of a hero, using their brain power to solve a problem. Through riddles, like “I have a lot to say and a spine but I don’t speak. What am I?” puzzles and coded messages, bunks worked together to solve the mystery, find the key, and unlock the door. Meanwhile, the Minis practiced following patterns to find counselor Lily M.’s birthday party!
Week 4 Heroes
H - Honor- Real Life Heroes
Two officers from the New Jersey State Trooper SWAT Team made a guest appearance Wednesday to share some safety tips and a closeup look at some of the tools of their trade. Trooper Joe shared that uniforms and cool equipment are not what makes a hero: “The first thing I tell kids is the real heroes are teachers. They do more for them than they will ever truly know.” On Friday, Liberty Corner Fire Company wowed campers with a visit from six firefighters and an engine. In their writing rotations this week, campers also wrote cards and letters expressing their gratitude for the honorable service of our military members. Heroes are all around us.
