Tips for Supporting Literacy at Home During the Holiday Break
As we head into the holiday season, it’s the perfect time to keep literacy skills fresh while having fun with family! Here are some simple and engaging activities for students in grades K-4 that parents can easily incorporate over the break:
1. Read Together Daily – Whether it's a holiday book, a favorite story, or a new adventure, make time for reading aloud each day. Discuss the story, ask questions, and make predictions to deepen comprehension.
2. Holiday Writing Fun – Encourage your child to write thank-you notes, holiday cards, or a short story about their holiday adventures. This helps strengthen writing skills while celebrating the season.
3. Play Word Games – Games like Scrabble, Boggle, or homemade word searches are a great way to boost spelling and vocabulary in a fun, low-pressure way.
4. Listen to Audiobooks – Audio books are a wonderful way to improve listening comprehension and build vocabulary. Let your child listen to a story, then talk about the main ideas and details together.
This break is a great time to share the joy of reading and writing together! Every small step counts toward fostering a love of literacy.
Has any staff member at West positively impacted you or your child's life? Have you noticed someone who has gone above and beyond? We would love to hear about it!
