Washburn Elementary School Update
October 2022 Edition
At Washburn, We Are Respectful, Responsible, Persistent and Safe!
Dear Washburn Families,
Time sure flies when you are having this much fun. The start of the 2022-23 school year has been positive. Students are adjusting to their schedules and becoming used to new routines. During the last couple of weeks, students have developed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Codes of Cooperation (COCs) to foster a positive, student centered culture.
Our students will soon be taking the N.W.E.A. tests in October (see below for the schedule) and these assessments will give us a snapshot of student learning in reading and mathematics. Where can I find more information about these tests?

Parents will also be invited into our building for Parent Teacher Conferences this year. We want to meet with you to share all of the wonderful things your child is doing and to hear how the school year is going for your child. Our goal is for one hundred percent participation. See below for details on how to sign up for conferences.

7 Years of P.B.I.S. in Our School
Washburn is in year seven of using PBIS. What is PBIS? "Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports" (PBIS) is an evidence-based three-tiered framework for improving and integrating all of the data systems, and practices affecting students outcomes every day. It is a way to support everyone - to create the kinds of schools where all students are successful. PBIS isn't a curriculum you purchase or something you learn during a one day professional development training. It is a commitment to addressing student behavior through systems change. When it's implemented well, students achieve improved social and academic outcomes." - https://www.pbis.org.
Our students earn "code cash" when they are caught doing something good by an adult in our building, like being respectful, responsible, persistent and safe. Students can trade their accumulated code cash for prizes in our school store.
Parents, if you are interested in joining the PBIS Leadership Team, please reach out to Ms. Robin Robertson (rrobertson@auburnschl.edu) for details.
Attendance Matters to Washburn Elementary School
Washburn routinely has had the highest attendance rate among the schools in the district for the month of September. Our students love being here and we take great pride in meeting the needs of our students and making them feel safe. We take attendance seriously here, and we hope to continue leading the way for the month of October.
***If your child is sick or has an appointment, please remember to call the school to let the secretary know they will be absent.***
Attendance Facts
Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school.
