The first month of 2025 flew by, bringing plenty of action in KISD athletics!
There’s been some great competition at the middle school level in basketball, and the high school basketball season is winding down. Both Girls and Boys Ellison teams, Shoemaker teams, and Harker Heights teams have qualified for the playoffs, as has the Chaparral girls. With a few more regular-season games remaining, a couple more teams may qualify as well.
The high school wrestling and swimming seasons are through the district-meet stage. Our KISD squads in each sport shined in those competitions and a large number advanced to regionals.
Shout out to HHHS girls basketball coach Shirretha Nelson, who earned career win No. 300!

When we ask our students how their day was, the most common response is “good.” But what does “good” really mean? To help get more insight into your child's day and encourage deeper conversations, here are a few questions you can ask at home:
- What was the best part of your day?
- Did anything surprise you today?
- What did you learn today that you didn’t know before?
- Did you have any challenges today? How did you handle them?
- Who did you spend time with today? What did you do together?
- What made you laugh today?
- Was there anything you found difficult or frustrating?
- Did you do something creative or try something new today?
- What’s something you’re proud of today?
- What’s one thing you’re looking forward to tomorrow?
