Dear Lansing School District Community,

I hope that this newsletter finds you well. As always, it is a pleasure to be writing to you all.

Today, I am writing to you one day after our wonderful high school graduations and two days after the last day of school. I really can't believe the school year is over. It just seems like yesterday that we were trying to open up every school right after the storm and power outage. I remember walking the halls of Attwood on the Sunday before school with my cell phone flashlight in hand, talking to our wonderful educators as they, even in the darkness, were putting their classrooms together. In the face of adversity, our staff pulled through, getting the school ready for opening day.

And that story had been played out over and over again in the Lansing School District. Adversity, struggle, and roadblocks have all come our way. Still, our staff, students, and families continue to preserve and thrive. Nothing could embody that more than yesterday's three graduations. As I looked out from the stage at Breslin, I got to see three separate schools, Eastern, Everett, and Sexton, each graduating students, and collectively, as a district, we once again are graduating the highest percentage of our students than ever before. We won't have the exact number until the Michigan Department of Education releases it next winter, but I can guarantee it will be higher than last year and thus, once again, a high-water mark for the district.

But our district is not just about numbers. It is made up of individual stories, collective triumphs, and a community that continues to stick together and help move our entire district forward. This graduating class started their high school careers online, not stepping foot into their high school until 10th grade. They missed an entire year of face-to-face instruction. These students could have just given up, blamed COVID, and looked for an excuse to remove themselves from school and the district. Instead, this group of students graduated with a higher percentage than any group before them. They led their sports teams to playoffs and winning records we hadn't seen in years. They participated in plays and dance recitals, robotics competitions, and music performances. In the face of adversity, our seniors coalesced and succeeded.

What a wonderful way to finish the year, celebrating our students' accomplishments in front of thousands of their families and friends. Holding graduation at MSU's Breslin Center was amazing. When you walked into the facility, you got to see the names of our graduates scrolled on digital screens, and you saw the schools' names throughout the lobby. We even had pictures of our students on the wall. This is the high professional level of a graduation, befitting our amazing students, that I want us to expect. And by having graduation at Breslin, we could also have more people come and witness the event. I hope we continue using Breslin in the future. Our students deserve it!

Well, I guess this is it for the year. I do hope that you have enjoyed reading these Superintendent Newsletters. Of course, we will continue to communicate with our district throughout the summer, but this will be the last weekly Superintendent Newsletter until the start of school. We will try to put out one during the month of July and one in August before the start of school.

I wish you all a wonderful summer. Please don't be a stranger. I, along with many of our educators, do work during the summer. If you have ideas, comments, projects, or programs you want to share with us, please don't hesitate to reach out.
