The Lion's Roar
APRIL 2025
Oak Hills Family,
It has been a fast and furious spring semester. I want to take a minute to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of a couple of our UIL teams and students who competed and finished out their seasons. Congratulations to both our boys and girls basketball coaches and teams. All four teams worked extremely hard this season with our 7th grade girls “B” team winning the Magnolia tournament, and ended up one game shy of claiming back to back district championships. Mrs. Whitmire and the cast and crew of the Oak Hills UIL One Act Play “Storyville” claimed runner-up (they were hands down the best in my “qualified” opinion) for their performance at the district competition in Magnolia. Mrs. Whitmire and her theatre arts department were district champs 3 years running so it’s ok to share I guess… way to go! A huge shout out to Ms. Brown and her art students, Addison Vecera, Raven Trow, Ashlyn Strong, and Avery Hutchinson who were named finalists in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Contest. The Oak Hills Royal Pride dance team competed recently against other schools from all over the Houston area. The officers were awarded 1st place for their routines and finished the season as being named Grand Champion Officers. As a team, they also finished first in their respective routines and ended the season on a high note receiving the recognition of Grand Champion Team to finish out the year. Outstanding job Mrs. Bess, Mrs. Faiola and Royal Pride Dance Team! Our Oak Hills cheer team, coached by Dr. Mullinex and Mrs. Holcomb performed in competition at Conroe High School. They showed their spirit placing 1st in stunt sequence, 2nd in chant and 2nd in pep rally. Awesome job cheer! Congratulations to Mr. Ibarra and the Oak Hills Band as they had 41 students receive the highest rating for their individual performances in the UIL Solo and Ensemble contest. Finally, a first for the Oak Hills Choir with all four choirs receiving a top rating of 1 in their UIL contest. A huge accomplishment for Ms. Norris, Ms. Seulean and our Oak Hills choirs.
A few things as we roll into April and head into the final stretch of the school year. It is only a natural inclination for students to start preparing for summer a little early. I encourage you continue to monitor grades and reach out to teachers, counselors and admin with any questions or concerns. Be vigilant with social media and have conversations with your student about the “dos and don’ts” of responsible social media posts and conversations. We have these conversations at school, but it is always good to reinforce at home as well. Lastly a reminder that Friday, April 18th is a district holiday and Monday, April 21st is a student holiday. As always, thank you for your continued support of all that we do at Oak Hills and for sharing your student with us each day.
Be Lion Bold,
G. Whitehead

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
PARENTING WITH HOPE
In middle and high school, the concept of “future” can bring out different emotions in our students. For some, this feels far off, exciting, and long-awaited. For others, it is approaching too fast with too many unknowns.
Hope is tied so much to our concept of the future. Additionally, our emotions are also tied up in what the future might bring. Eleanor Roosevelt wisely said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of
their dreams.”
At this age, helping students find that beautiful dream might just be what propels them to achieve more than they thought they could. Whether the present is troubling or smooth, the future can be something very
different than what we are experiencing now. The key to hope is finding a nugget of inspiration, or a tiny light, or even a little bit of motivation— whatever is enough to keep us looking forward to a better tomorrow.
Questions to consider:
• What do you hope for? How does that inspire you?
• Reflect on a time when something good came out of something bad. What did that teach you about hope?
Questions to ask your student:
• When you think about your future, what brings you hope? Why?
• Do you have a favorite quote, or image, or saying that you go to when you need inspiration? What is it?
THE CLINIC CHRONICLE
Hello Lions!
It has been a busy school year in the clinic. Please keep your student home if they are not feeling well or if they have had fever, diarrhea or vomited in the last 24 hours.
See the state of Texas Administrative code below for guidance.
Illness Requiring Exclusion from Schools-Fever, Diarrhea, and Vomiting-exclude until symptom free for 24 hours without use of suppressing medications.
Texas Administrative Code TITLE 25 HEALTH SERVICES PART 1 DEPARTMENT OF STATE HEALTH SERVICES CHAPTER 97 COMMUNICABLE DISEASES SUBCHAPTER A CONTROL OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASES RULE §97.7
Immunizations-The State of Texas Immunization Law requires a Tdap vaccine (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) within the past 5 years and Meningococcal vaccine for 7th grade. Students will not be able to stay enrolled in school without the proper documentation. If you have a 6th grade student, and they receive any immunizations, please turn the record into the clinic so that their record can be updated and they are not delayed in starting 7th grade.
If your student has an exemption for immunizations, the original notarized affidavit is required, not a copy.
Please ensure your student knows their phone numbers! With the new cell phone policy, we can only help students with numbers we have in Skyward. Please ensure your information is up to date.
All medications require a doctor’s signature yearly to be administered on campus due to a change in the Texas State Nursing laws. Consents are good for the current school year and medications are disposed of if not picked up by the parent at the end of the school year. Students may not transport medications to and from school.
Health condition paperwork and action plans are documented for the current school year only. Doctor’s orders do not carry over to the next school year. Health conditions are added yearly to your student’s profile in Skyward for teachers and staff, and without proper documentation, we do not add health conditions.
Thank you!
Nurse James & Mrs. Bailey

MISD ATTENDANCE POLICY & Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few tips to consider:
● Have your student arrive at school on time and attend every class period, especially the official attendance-taking period (9:15 AM JH and HS).
● A student who is tardy to class will be subject to the consequences established at each campus in accordance with the possible consequences in the MISD Student Code of Conduct.
● What happens if your student needs to see a doctor/dentist/therapist? If possible, we encourage you to schedule appointments outside of school hours. Obtain and submit a medical note for documentation to provide to your student’s Campus Attendance Specialist. Documentation is needed so the absence will be coded correctly.
● When you receive an absence notification, please follow up with your student and the campus attendance specialist. If you have documentation for your student’s absence, please submit as early as possible (it is recommended to submit within 48 hours). If you believe a teacher has marked a student incorrectly, please have your student reach out to the teacher of the marked period.
