Scott Middle School's Motto- "We Enter to Learn and Leave to Achieve"
What Has Been Happening in Mr. Pope's Classroom?
We're very excited to have our 6th grade classes and our honors 7th grade class are piloting a new science curriculum in the third marking period. TWIG Science is a phenomenon based curriculum aligned with PA STEEL standards that is being considered by science teachers in CASD. The most exciting part is that it not only teaches science content, but teaches how to do science (because science is a verb!).
6th grade will be exploring how to protect people around the world from the threat of volcanoes and 7th grade will be designing a way to grow enough food while preventing toxic algae blooms. As we investigate these problems, ask our students what they think, feedback from students and families is important and welcome!
THANK YOU for Giving Back to Coatesville Youth Initiative!
Thank you for helping us give back to our community! We were able to collect three boxes full of new hygiene products and school supplies to stock the Coatesville Youth Initiative's resource closet. If you have donations at home, that were not turned it, you may bring them next week and I will make a follow up run to drop them off. Thank you again for helping us honor Martin Luther King Jr. and celebrate giving back to those in need.
Winter Benchmark Testing
Over the last 2 weeks students have been checking in with teachers and completing mid year benchmarks. ELA (English Language Arts) teachers have been checking in with some students and completing Acadience benchmarking. This is where the students read a few stories aloud and then retell what they read. All students have gone into our IXL program and completed the midyear diagnostic in both ELA and Math.
Next week students will complete the CDT (Classroom Diagnostic Test) Benchmark tests. ELA will be Tuesday and Wednesday first thing in the morning. Math will be next Monday and Tuesday first thing in the morning. These tests look more like the PSSAs but are completed online. I have told students that there will be prizes for all students that have their chromebooks with them and charged for all 4 days of testing.
We use these benchmark tests to measure academic growth for the 1st half of the year. Teachers use the information to make targeted groups for instruction (support and enrichment). I use the information to update our school plan for the year. Please have a conversation with your student(s) and encourage them to do their best. We are excited to see the growth our students have made and celebrate it!
