6th Grade Enrollment FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Enrollment Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How are students placed on teams?
A: Our student management system randomly assigns students to teams.
Q: Can I request a specific teacher or team?
A.: We do not accept specific request for a team. If you have multiple students (twins) and you wish to have them on the same or different teams, you may speak with a counselor. If you have a special circumstance, please call a counselor.
Q: My student really wants to take Band/Orchestra but also PE or Art?
A: Students in 6th grade only choose one elective. If you are interested in Band or Orchestra, we recommend you choose this elective, as it's important for students to begin learning in 6th grade. Students will have many opportunities in future grade levels to choose multiple elective classes such as Art, PE, STEM, etc.
Q: Should my student take advanced math or advanced language arts?
A: If you are unsure, we recommend that you speak with your child's current grade teacher or counselor. For Language Arts, students should be reading at or above grade level and be proficient in standardized testing. Advanced courses will require more critical thinking and analytical skills.
Q: Does my student have to take advanced language arts and advanced math?
A: No- a student can select just one advanced course.
Q: When will I know what team my student is on?
A: You will receive a schedule with your team assignment and bus information during schedule pick-up in August.
Q: My student is on an IEP. Will this follow him/her?
A: Yes, we will continue to provide the services specified on IEP.
Q: If I am in band or orchestra, do I have to purchase an instrument?
A: You will need to provide an instrument for your student but there are options to rent.
Q: Do I have to take all of the classes in the exploratory wheel?
A: Yes- you are choosing to rotate through PE, Drama, and STEM.
Q: Will students swim in P.E.? Do they have to change clothes?
A: 6th grade PE class is a combined boys/girls class like elementary. They will not swim or change clothes.
Q: What if I need to change my child's enrollment?
A: Please contact a counselor before the end of this school year. After schedules have been prepared, schedule changes will not be considered until after school begins. Any changes are based on course availability.
Q: Will you offer virtual classes?
A: Information and the application process for virtual will be sent out to all parents in May.
Q: If we think we are moving out of district, should we complete an enrollment form?
A: Yes--we recommend that all current students complete the form.
Q: My student is in ARC/Gifted. Do you have a gifted class?
A: We do not have a gifted class. We encourage students who are gifted to take advanced courses. Students will have an opportunity to be a part of our gifted program, which takes place before school.
Q: How can I learn more about Union 6th Grade Center?
A: We will host a Moving Up for parents in the spring. During this time, you will be invited to attend an informational session and tour the building. Information will be sent home with students.
Q: What is Schedule Pick-Up?
A: Schedule Pick-up is when each student will receive their student schedule, get their picture taken for their student ID, receive bus information, etc. You will be invited to a separate event called Meet the teacher, where students can meet teachers.
