The Carver Connection

GWC Update
Dear Families,
We have had an amazing start to our year and that wouldn't be possible without everyone working together as a team - students, staff, families, and community partners. GWC is a small, tight-knit community and one where we desire your continued partnership. When we work together, we can ensure that each scholar is successful.
As we settle into the year, it is important that you reach out to the appropriate personnel when concerns arise. Teachers are typically the first line of defense since they spend the majority of the day with your scholar(s); therefore, our ask is that you reach out to the classroom teacher first. This ensures a strong partnership is established and that questions and/or resolutions can be addressed. If concerns remain, we then encourage you to reach out to another member, associated with the question or concern, of our team (e.g. support staff) that can assist. If additional intervention is needed, please reach out to the appropriate administrator.
We kindly ask that you read all communication from both teachers and the school. Class newsletters are sent out on Monday morning, and the school newsletter will follow and be delivered via email, text, and posted on both our school website and Class Dojo, no later than Tuesday afternoon. It is very important that your email address is updated in IC and that you've joined Class Dojo (follow teacher instructions for joining your scholar's class).
Our next school event is Class Carver or also known as "Carver Academic Night". This night is very informative about what you can expect academically throughout the year. It also provides an opportunity to meet your scholar's teacher again, and ask any pertinent questions or seek instructional clarifications. It is important that you understand what you can expect and how you can help your scholar achieve to their utmost potential.
As always, please reach out with questions,
Amy Smith, Ed.S.
Assistant Principal
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
- School is NOT in session on Monday, September 2nd.
- Wellness Wednesday will begin on Wednesday, September 4th. Scholars may wear athletic wear on those days.
- Beginning Friday, September 6th, scholars may wear jeans, if those choose; however, they MUST be in a GWC shirt.
- There is a correction from last week's newsletter. Class Carver, our academic night, is scheduled for Thursday, September 12, NOT September 14.
- Students MUST be in uniform daily with khaki pants and a GWC shirt. The ONLY exception is on Wellness Wednesday or jeans day on Friday.
- Transportation changes MUST go through our front office, by noon, to Kisha Jackson at kisha.jackson@fayette.kyschools.us
- Please send scholars with a backpack daily and do NOT remove any tags (including the blue kindergarten tags).
- Morning car riders should exit from the driver's side of the car onto the sidewalk.
- Please ensure that your car tag is on your dashboard in the afternoon. If you need a replacement, contact Kisha Jackson.
- GWC has a school Facebook page that you are encouraged to follow for updates, info and fun pictures and is linked here or always linked below in the newsletter.
MORNING CAR LINE
As a friendly reminder, please do NOT drop scholars off on East Sixth Street. This is a significant safety concern. All scholars must be dropped off on Keller Alley where they can safely exit their car onto the sidewalk.
*Please do NOT park or block driveways on East Sixth St. Our goal is to be good neighbors and to alleviate any undue stress on residents.
MAP TESTING COMING SOON
MAP is a trusted and innovative assessment tool used for measuring achievement and growth in K–12 math and reading. It provides teachers with accurate, actionable evidence to help inform instructional strategies regardless of how far students are above or below grade level.
- MAP will be administered three times this year (fall, winter, spring) and our scholars will be participating on September 3rd and September 5th; therefore, it is VERY important that they are in attendance and well-rested.
- Results will be shared with you at our fall conferences.
EXTRA CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES
Soccer Shots flier was sent home with your scholar. This is an after-school activity to take place on Wednesdays from 2:45-3:30 for our K-4th graders. This is limited to the first 20 scholars that register. Please use the link to register. Soccer Shots Registration
MusicWorks is offering a FREE after school program that serves 1st - 5th graders 4 days a week, 2 hours a day, 32 weeks out of the school year. They offer the following instruments for the kids to learn: Violin, Viola, Cello, and Clarinet. MusicWorks Registration
Camp Hope is an opportunity for scholars who have lost a loved one in the past 2 years. This is a one-day camp dedicated to helping them with coping skills and support. If interested, please view the attached flier for more information.
Those scholars that signed up for Project Uplift will start the first session on Monday August 26th. Parents please be available to pick up scholars by 3:35 in the bus loop.
VOLUNTEERS
Fayette County Public Schools and GWC invites families to participate in our educational community! We need all kinds of volunteers to help make sure our scholars have an enriching experience in the classroom and beyond. For more information about volunteering in FCPS, please follow this link.

REPEATS
TRAFFIC & CARLINE UPDATES
- Our new carline and traffic patterns are flowing as expected, and we thank you for your patience.
- Students arriving by car MUST be unloaded from the driver's side so that they exit onto our sidewalk.
- Please do NOT exit the carline to pass other cars; this presents a safety hazard.
- If you are parking to come to the front office, please do NOT walk through the cars in line. Please walk to the sidewalk entrance and cross there.
- Please place your car number on your dashboard during afternoon dismissal. If you need a card please contact Kisha Jackson.
- There is NO left turn during our morning drop off OR afternoon dismissal. All vehicles MUST turn right onto East Sixth St.
ATTENDANCE
It is important that your scholar is here daily. When scholars are absent they miss important academic content. Equally, tardies have a negative impact upon your scholar as well and cause a disruption to the learning environment when arriving late.
Did you know?
- A child who is 10 minutes late misses 32 hours a year of lost education.
- A child who misses 1 day a week loses 2 months a year of education.
- Half a day a week missed throughout school life equates to 1 full year of lost education.
Please make every effort to have your scholar here and on time daily!
- If scholars are not in their classroom at 7:45 a.m., when the bell rings, we kindly ask that you check them in through the front office.
- If your scholar is absent, please make sure you send in an excuse and/or parent note, within three days, at which time the absence will be marked as excused.
- Keep in mind that you are allowed 10 parent notes per year.
ASSAULT AND THREATS OF VIOLENCE - NOTIFICATION
IS IT BULLYING?
Bullying is mean or cruel treatment on purpose over and over again to the same person. These acts of being mean have to have occurred 2 or more times with the same person in order to be considered bullying. If it has happened once then it is considered teasing.
Bullying can be physical, verbal, or emotional.
Bullying consists of, but is not limited to: name-calling, violence, theft, rumors, exclusion, threats, intimidation, put-downs and pranks.
Students should all be treated with courtesy and equality regardless of age, gender, race, religion, orientation, size, disability, intelligence, athletic ability or popularity.
*If you are unsure if your scholar has experienced bullying, please refer to the guidelines above and/or by following this link or click on the button below.
CEP & Free/Reduced Application
Dear GWC Families,
While this school’s meals will be provided at no charge for the 2024-25 school year (through the National School Lunch Program’s CEP-Community Eligibility Provision), it is still important that families who would qualify for (Free/Reduced) meal assistance, to fill out an application every school year. This is a great support to our families but also provides funding and resources for the school.
- Income guidelines are below that may help determine if you should complete the application.
- If your child recently received an approval of direct certification (DC) benefits letter for this school year, you do not need to fill out the form.
- Only one form per family needed, and it only takes a few minutes.
For the 2024-25 school year, complete this form online beginning August 1st @ http://bit.ly/FCPSEBF or (scan QR Code).
If you need any help filling out the form on-line, please contact Jessica Morgison, FRAM Coordinator for FCPS Child Nutrition at 859-422-2152.
Thank you for your help!
