Chronic absenteeism is considered a hidden educational crisis in the U.S.

Throughout this first month of school, strive for your child to have perfect attendance (unless, of course, your child falls ill).

Although some children experience anxiety around coming to school, especially in the early weeks of the school year, it is important to keep bringing them, each and everyday- because it WILL become easier for them! Succumbing to that anxiety lays the groundwork for your child to become chronically absent. If your child is nervous about coming to school and is giving you a "run for your money" in the mornings this month, don't hesitate to give us a call and we can try to help.

Children with good attendance (9 or fewer days absent per year) typically:

*Maintain quality friendships

*Are less anxious about school

*Are more confident

*Are higher achieving

*GRADUATE!

*Experience success in the work force and in LIFE!

Remember, all absences count toward chronic absenteeism, even if you call the attendance line or provide documentation.

In Fraser, we continue to work hard to decrease chronic absenteeism- which in turn benefits ALL students!

Please note- On indoor lineup days (due to inclement weather), all students enter through the main entrance.

If your child has specific medical needs, please reach out to the main office prior to the start of school. In order to administer medication, consent forms must be completed. Consent forms for prescription medications must include dosage and frequency information signed by a physician. Medication, including inhalers, must be stored in the main office and not in backpacks or pockets.

In addition, if your child has a food allergy or medical condition that could potentially require treatment at school, we will need an updated 2024-25 medical plan signed by a physician.

Our Young Five, Kindergarten, 3rd Grade, and 'New To Edison' families must complete the technology agreement linked below, in order for your child to be issued a device. Please ensure that this form is completed ASAP, as we're working hard to get the ipads dispersed to our students.

iPad distribution will begin on Monday, September 9th. If you have any unpaid fines, please pay them as soon as possible. Please talk with your child about where their "home base" will be to charge the iPad each night. iPads should come to school fully charged each day.

Once all students have received their ipads, we will begin pushing out instructions and assisting families with signing up for parent accounts on Canvas.

Again this year, our PTO is hosting Ellie's Extravaganza- our fall Fun Run! This is, by far, our biggest fundraising event of the year. This year, our goal is to raise $15,000. In order to do so, we're encouraging all families to try to raise at least $50.00 for our school. The funds raised will be used to help fund school activities, recess/play equipment, the school store, and more!

On Wednesday, students will receive the information to officially kick off our fundraiser. If you'd like to get started early, with setting up your child's account on FundHub, please utilize the link and school identifier below!

This year, the teachers and staff members on our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports) Committee planned a school-wide PBIS training for the first week of school. All students rotated through various areas of the school and learned the rules and correct ways to behave in each area. These spaces included: Hallways, Arrival/Dismissal Areas, Cafeteria, Playground, Indoor Recess/Lineup, and more!

In addition to teaching students the rules/procedures for the different areas, students also listened to excerpts from the book- "What if Everybody Did That?" while learning to try to always keep their "Hands Off" of others during play. Students considered what the world would look like if EVERYBODY put their hands on each other during play, lineups, etc, and they agreed that it would be a chaotic/uncomfortable world! Our staff recognizes that keeping "Hands Off" is absolutely going to be an ongoing learning experience for our Eagles, especially our littlest ones. We're committed to helping them to understand and begin to utilize safe/healthy boundaries during play and throughout their days!

Additionally, students learned strategies for identifying the "Size of a Problem". They then learned to utilize "Stop. Walk. Talk." when working through small/medium problems with peers.

We encouraged students to follow these steps when a peer is bothering them:

1) Tell the peer to stop doing what they're doing.

2) Walk away from the peer or the situation.

3) Tell an adult if the problem persists, including telling the adult the steps that they've tried to solve the problem.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly to maintaining a safe school environment, we encouraged students to avoid "using their hands" to solve problems. We find, time and time again, that situations immediately escalate when students use their hands to solve problems with peers, jeopardizing the safety of all involved. These problems then linger. Typically, the students that quickly jump to using their hands to solve problems, end up with the most problems to solve throughout their years. Students considered what Edison would be like "If Everybody Did That" and they seemed to collectively agree that, at school, it's best that we use Stop. Walk. Talk. to solve our problems! As always, we would greatly appreciate any parents who can echo that messaging from home!

6th-grade students who qualify for advanced ELA & Math placement classes at Richards Middle School (RMS) will be notified prior to September 9th. We are currently awaiting State testing results to determine eligible candidates. RMS will reach out to families once identification has been completed.

Now more than ever, we need to address the whole child. Best practice shows that students who feel safe and secure are better prepared to engage in their learning. Therefore, we are excited to continue to use Second Step in our K-8 classes beginning in September to further strengthen our commitment to social and emotional learning. Second Step offers weekly, age-appropriate virtual lessons for students to help them with various social and emotional skills. These weekly lessons will build on and support all of the great work we're doing at Edison to support our students. Combined with our schoolwide restorative practices and consistent PBIS expectations, we are creating a firm Tier 1 foundation for supporting all of our students' social, emotional, and behavioral development.

CARE is a resource in our community that helps families and individuals who are experiencing difficulties with mental health or substance abuse. CARE's Student Assistance program offers families the opportunity to receive a thorough assessment for children who are experiencing mental health issues. CARE will then provide resources to assist with concerns. CARE also is a great place to attend parenting classes for Early Childhood through Teen. Speciality classes related to anger management and play and learn groups for younger children are also programs provided through CARE. For more information or for a referral to CARE's Student Assistance program please contact our social workers, Mrs. Gonsler or Ms. Hasselle, or contact CARE at 586-541-CARE.

Our first PTO meeting will take place on Thursday, September 12th at 4:00PM in the Edison Media Center.

SACC is available at all six of our elementary buildings. Spaces are limited and schedules must be submitted at time of registration. Drop-in childcare is not available.

Fee Structure

• Morning Session: $7.25 flat rate per child*
• Afternoon Session: $10.45 flat rate per child*
• Same Day Morning & Afternoon Session: $16.20 flat rate per child*
• Half-Day Session: $24.00 per child* for the afternoon session
• Early Release Days: $21.50 flat rate per child* for the afternoon session

*The Y offers a 10% sibling discount for every child enrolled after the first child. This is auto-applied when you register. There is also an opportunity for an additional discount based on financial need.

The State of Michigan will provide a free breakfast and lunch for all students who want them throughout the 2024-2025 school year. Although not required, we do ask that families complete the Education Benefit Form located HERE. By doing so you help ensure the school receives additional funding.
