Principal Notes
Second Semester is well underway here at ECMS and we have lots to share since we last sent out a newsletter before winter break.
First off, congratulations to our boys basketball teams who finished up great seasons a couple of weeks ago. The 8th grade boys basketball team capped the season off bringing home an end of the season championship vs. Switzerland County. Next up, the girls basketball and Wrestling seasons have begun. Come out and support these two programs as they work hard on the court/mat.
Academically we have had a number of successes. We crowned our Geography Bee Champion, Ostyn Gellert (7th Grade) and our Spelling Bee Champion, Brooklyn Nix (6th Grade). Congratulations to you both on your accomplishments. We had 231 students (grades 6-8) achieve exemplary honor roll (3.8 gpa or higher) for Quarter 2. We had another 230 students achieve honor roll (3.33 - 3.79) for Quarter 2. Keep up the great work!
Band and Choir both had fantastic performances in December. Thank you for your support of these students as they continue to grow in these areas. Also in the arts, Drama Club has selected the cast for their next production “Shrek” coming up in April. We look forward to another great show from this group.

Congratulations to our January Students of the Month!
Annabelle Edmonds is a 6th grader who has already completed all of her ALEKS course this year! She loves the movie Christmas Vacation and is a member of FCCLA. Her favorite pastime is cheer, and her favorite subject is math. Great job, Annabelle!
Parker Schneider is a 7th grader nominated by his teachers for his hard work and because he is always demonstrating model behavior. He loves steak and video games. His favorite sport's team is EC Football, and his favorite movie is The Waterboy. Way to go, Parker!
Elizabeth Melton is an 8th grader whose teachers describe her as a student who always gives her best effort. Her favorite subject is English/Language Arts, she is a member of FCCLA, and her favorite pastime is shopping. Keep up the great work, Elizabeth!
Guidance
High School Counselors will be here on Feb. 5th-7th to meet with 8th grade students about next year's schedules.
Fearless Female March 8th Southeastern Career Center, 20 students will participate. They will be interactive in the following programs: Auto Services, Building Trades, Diesel, Electrical, Heavy Equipment, Precision Machine and Welding. This exposes young women to non-traditional and STEM related pathways.
CASA Youth Summit March 13th. All 8th grade students will participate in a trip to the Lawrenceburg Event Center. They will participate in hands-on activities and educational exercises focused on drugs, alcohol, tobacco, vaping, and resilience to peer pressure. Provided will also be valuable resources within our community.
ECMS will be having a Career Day & Touch-a-Truck event on Wednesday, March 20th, 2024. Guest speaker sessions are about 45 minutes in length with AM, PM, or all-day options. Touch-A-Truck will be in the afternoon. Success Opportunity Session (SOS)
Success Opportunity Session or SOS is an after school program that allows students to get caught up on homework. SOS is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 p.m to 5 p.m. To have your student attend, please contact one of their teachers or their counselor.

GET INVOLVED
Student Council
We have been busy!! Thanks to help from the community we were able to donate over 1,000 stuffed animals to the Teddy Bear Toss at the Cincinnati Cyclones game on Saturday, January 6th! Picture attached. In December, we held a door decorating contest! Student council hosted Extra Night January 25th.
Coming up, we plan to spoil the school with some extra surprises.
FCCLA
As we approach the Indiana FCCLA State Leadership Conference, the members and officers have been working diligently to complete their STAR Events and State Projects. Lessons and service projects have been ongoing throughout the last month, including: Recycling, Dental Health, Teen Wellness, Early Childhood Lessons, Seatbelt Safety, Paws for a Cause and Ronald McDonald House activities and donations. We have a lot more activities planned for the upcoming months so stay tuned!
Members of the Month for January are Kate Swales and Caroline Hall. Officers of the Month are Josie Wolf and Aislyn Ankenman. Thank you ladies for all of your hard work, time and dedication to FCCLA and our community.
National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)
Thank you to everyone who participated in the January service project. We partnered with FCCLA to collect items for the Ronald McDonald House of Cincinnati as well as collecting shoes/socks for students within our corporation. Please remind your member to fill out the service hour form on Classroom. As a reminder, members will need to earn 5 service hours between August-May of this school year. We have at least two more projects to earn hours (if students participated in projects so far, he/she would have 4+ hours already completed). Information for our next project will be posted on Classroom. This service project will be making Valentine’s Day cards for local organizations such as nursing homes. Drama Club
The ECMS Drama Club has started rehearsals for Shrek JR! We are so excited to continue rehearsals over the next few months with this awesome cast! Mark your calendars, performances are Friday, April 12th and Saturday, April 13th at 7pm and Sunday, April 14th at 3pm. We would love to see you there!
Academic Team
We have competed in numerous meets and are preparing for our state meet on April 27th! The theme is 80's & 90's!
Art Club
The next Art Club meeting will be Monday, February 26, 2024. Details will be posted to the classroom one week prior. Recently, Art Club members painted valentines using wooden hearts.

FFA
- ECMS FFA members will begin their annual Strawberry and Jams sale very soon! There will be a mandatory MS FFA meeting after school within the next week or two. PLEASE WATCH YOUR EMAILS FOR THE SPECIFIC DATE AND TIME OF THIS MEETING!
- ECMS FFA Members are busy preparing for Leadership Development Events, which are contests to help students prepare their career readiness skills. Students will be competing in demonstration, public speaking, and quiz bowl contests on March 2nd at North Decatur High School. Best of luck to those students.

Agriculture
6th Grade Agriculture:
Quarter 3 Agriculture students have begun exploring agriculture topics and learning about the FFA. Students began learning the basics of Parliamentary Procedure through the FFA Opening Ceremonies Activity. During this activity, students had the opportunity to role play being FFA Officers and FFA members. Students really enjoyed learning about the responsibilities of each officer in the FFA program. Students will begin their Plant and Soil Sciences Unit next week. To kickstart that unit, students have planted their very own mini greenhouses. Students planted Kentucky 31 Fescue so they can begin learning about monocot plant anatomy once those begin to germinate. 7/8th Grade Agriculture:
Students in the 7/8th Grade mixed Agriculture classes have been busy learning about agriculture commodities and by-products. Students were able to identify that a commodity is any raw product that can be purchased, sold, or traded within agriculture. Upon completion of commodity research both locally and globally, students then investigated one commodity and had to identify at least thirty by-products that are manufactured from that commodity. Students worked together to develop a Commodity and By-Products Poster which were presented in class. See some of these awesome Commodity and By-Product Posters which are attached.
Math
6th Grade Math
Sixth grade math classes have been working on ordering and comparing integers and using absolute value as well as finishing up graphing and the coordinate plane. They are moving into solving data tables and graphing relationships based on these tables in addition to working with relationships with two variables.
Sixth grade Annabelle Edmonds has completed the 6th Grade ALEKS Math course (326 total topics!). She is now over two-thirds of the way through 7th Grade ALEKS Math. Congratulations to Annabelle and keep up the great work!
Students in 6th grade Advanced and Honors math classes are currently working on percentages. They have worked on tax, tip, markups, discounts, and interest earned and spent. The students are learning the formulas and have started using calculators to solve the problems.
7th Grade Math
Seventh grade Math is diving deep into Algebra Standards for Quarter 3. Students are working with equations that fit into real world situations, focusing on writing the equation and then solving fluently. These skills are driving their focus to explore countless opportunities in Math. We are working towards developing these skills throughout the quarter as we also touch on some geometry concepts. The students are eager to work with these concepts and are starting the semester off really strong.
Students in the 7th grade Honors & Advanced Math classes drew on their knowledge of linear relationships to develop a clear understanding of functions. Over the past few weeks, they completed the Functions module. They identified functions and the graphs of functions. They used this understanding to build fluency with constructing linear functions and identifying nonlinear functions. They applied their understanding by comparing linear functions and analyzing functions qualitatively.
8th Grade Math
In 8th grade Math, students finished up constructing linear functions from real world situations. The first week of the quarter was spent on reviewing how to graph an equation that is written in slope-intercept form. Students are now moving on to solving systems of equations by graphing.
Eighth grade Honors & Advanced Algebra I students have been working hard to master identifying the domain and range for real world functions as well as analyzing features of a function. Over the next few weeks, students will continue working with linear functions and equations by focusing more on graphing and investigating relationships using scatter plots and lines of fit to make predictions.
Mrs. Mullalley's ALEKS Wall of Fame is filling up! Congratulations goes to several more students for completing their ALEKS Math Course! Seventh-grade students, Brayden Klump and Ethan Andres, have completed Course 3 and are moving onto the Algebra 1 Course. Eighth grade students, Ella Stenger, Morgan Schumate, and Brooklyn Botts, have completed their Algebra 1 Course and are moving onto the Algebra 2 Course. Keep up the hard work!
Family & Consumer Sciences (FACS)
The FACS students are off to a great start and new year. The 6th graders explored opportunities available through FCCLA and are getting ready to sew their pin cushions and pillows. The 7th and 8th graders learned about decision-making and are working on the FCCLA Career Exploration Project to explore future careers and set goals for high school and beyond. They will begin the sewing unit next week and will be making pillowcases.
Social Studies
Geography Bee
The social studies department held their yearly geography bee this month and Ostyn Gellert was the winner. Ostyn competed against the entire 7th and 8th grade student body. For a prize he received an Amazon gift card and a fastpass for lunch for a week. Congratulations Ostyn!
The sixth graders have been working hard on their civics unit. They started the unit by interviewing classmates and an adult on what will be covered this semester. The results were that students do not have a lot of prior knowledge about the topics that are being covered this semester. The students were then introduced to the parts of the constitution. They have learned about the preamble earlier this month and now we are concentrating on the Bill of Rights. Students are enjoying learning about their rights as a U.S. Citizen. They are creating skits and acting out the scenario for each of the Bill of Rights. Amendments 11-27 are also being introduced and discussed. In the coming weeks, they will begin discussing the three branches of government, their duties, and the separation of powers.
7th Grade
The seventh grade classes of Mr. Jackson and Mr. Hafertepen began this semester talking about the importance of trade in medieval Africa and early African kingdoms like Mali, Ghana, and Songhai. The seventh graders also discussed Mansa Musa-- The richest person who ever lived! Topics then turned to the slave trade and its effects on Africa. The classes will soon be covering European colonies in Africa and how that impacted the continent. Mr. Hafertepen notes that the students have shown great maturity in discussing some tough topics in class and he looks forward to continuing watching them grow.
8th Grade
In U.S. history, Mrs. Bond and Mr. Meyer have covered the Louisiana Purchase, the War of 1812, Thomas Jefferson and the impact of his presidency, as well as the Hamilton/Burr Duel. The 8th grade classes are moving towards the Andrew Jackson administration and the Trail of Tears. The idea and impact of Manifest Destiny will also be discussed.
Special Education
We have jumped right into 3rd quarter! Students have been hard at work, and their growth continues to show. Parents should be on the lookout for progress monitoring reports if they haven't been received yet. Please remember to reach out at any time to your child's Teacher of Record if you have any questions or concerns.

Art
6th grade Students are learning about additive sculpture and have created clay pinch pots. Once complete, the pots will be fired, glazed, and fired again. Students will have the option of planting succulents in them once they are glazed. We’d like to thank Mr. Schneider for helping us with this project and caring for the plants until we are ready for them.
7/8th Grade Students are creating watercolor pencil paintings. They chose an animal’s eyes to draw. They learned the Whole-to-part drawing method to draw the animal first and then worked on color blending to paint the eyes.
Music
The ECMS Choir Department is looking forward to hosting the Indiana State School Music Association District Solo & Ensemble on Saturday, February 3rd. In addition to hosting this event, we also have 20 students preparing solos. These students have been working hard since December to prepare solos for this festival.
Creative Dramatics
A brand new group of students started Creative Dramatics this month! We have been talking about the basics of theatre and the skills that students need to use to be successful actors. We have also started playing some drama games to work on our facial expressions and movement.
Band
Extra Night
The Advanced Band gave a great performance at Extra Night on Thursday, Jan. 25th. Thanks to everyone who came out to hear our performance!
Solo & Ensemble
On Saturday, Jan. 27th, several ECMS students participated in the 2024 ISSMA Solo & Ensemble festival, hosted by Columbus East High School. For the second year in a row, ALL participants from ECMS earned Gold ratings! A Gold rating is the highest rating a student can receive at the event. This is a huge achievement for our students! ISSMA Band Festival
Mark your calendars: Our next performance will be on Saturday, March 9th, at the ISSMA Band Festival, hosted by Clark-Pleasant Middle School. This event includes all band students in grades 6-8. Keep your eyes open for more information as the event draws nearer.

Science
Sixth graders have been working on a Life Science unit. They are beginning to investigate biotic and abiotic factors, competition, ecosystems, and population changes. Students worked together to create a puzzle inside a one meter square, giving them a hands-on experience of what happens when overcrowding occurs. Mr. Johnson and Mrs. Lecher are eager to work with students on skull identification, dissecting owl pellets, and making a classroom sized food web.
7th Grade Science

3rd quarter is our Earth Science focus. We have started with the Earth's layers and how the Earth transfers heat and energy through convection currents. We completed a foldable that models the Earth's interior. We have moved onto the minerals and have started a research project to find out information about different minerals. Students will build a 3D model of their mineral and an informational cube. We also started to read a fictional story Called Blue John's cavern and will be identifying what part of the story is factual and what is fiction. Moving forward, students will conduct identification labs on minerals and rocks, just like true geologists, and build a satellite model like engineers. The model will help them understand how geologists use satellite information to monitor and explore the Earth and its surface.

7th graders are studying renewable and nonrenewable resources. Then we will be learning about natural disasters. Student's will produce a weather report on a particular disaster.
8th Grade Science - Mrs. Bertke and Mr. Dawley
Second semester eighth graders are concentrating on the Life Science Standards. Students started by learning about how different organisms reproduce and will then begin Genetics. Labs have included using microviewers to observe different cells involved in reproduction and virtually cloning mice.
English
6th Grade ELA - Mrs. Andres & Miss Packer
Third quarter has been off to a great start so far! The students have been working hard to master the skills that we have been continuously practicing throughout the year. We recently began their informative essays, which is our genre of study this quarter. With the tools and instruction previously learned, students will be able to write with guided independence. Additionally, pronouns, one of our parts of speech, will continue to be a focus in writing. The students will be able to write ensuring that the pronouns are not ambiguous, but clear and exact.
Directly aligned with the qualities of our informative essay, our two literature studies this quarter will be nonfiction: Port Chicago and Freedom Walkers. As students analyze the information presented in these novels, other skills will also be reinforced: Greek/Latin root study, responding in detail and elaboration to specific questions that contribute to the topic, and finally, gaining an understanding of multiple perspectives.

6th Grade Reading - Mrs. Stroh
Welcome to second semester reading! We have had a great start to the quarter in reading. Students are learning how to use “text evidence” to support written response answers. They are also learning to use “inferencing” skills to understand what the author is implying. We are working daily to read short informational passages and identify facts from the passages. We have switched roles several times and the students have become the teacher. They score different “RACE” writing responses during this activity. It is always fun to see how strict the students are when grading these responses. Looking forward to the rest of the semester with this great group of kids!!!
7th Grade ELA—Miss Rogers and Mrs. Sohns
Seventh-grade ELA students started the third quarter by learning about refugees throughout the world and history. We specifically learned about Jewish refugees during World War II, Cuban refugees in the 1990s, and Syrian refugees in the 2000s. We learned about them because each of the three main characters in our book, Refugee, comes from one of these periods. Even though they are from different time periods and areas of the world, the stories of the three main characters are tied together. Students have been enjoying the book so far. In addition to literature, we have also been working on capitalization skills in grammar. Students have also been working hard on improving our RACE writing skills by completing weekly writing assignments.
7th Grade Honors/Advanced
For the third quarter, honors and advanced students are reading Salt to the Sea. The setting of the book is World War II, and the characters are fleeing danger in the Baltic area. Before we started to read the book, students conducted research about a significant figure or event during the time. Students worked with a partner and taught the class about their selected topic. They all did a great job! We are about one-third of the way into the book, and we are loving it so far! In addition to literature, we have also been working on capitalization skills in grammar. Students have also been working hard on improving our RACE writing skills by completing weekly writing assignments.
7th Grade Reading - Mrs. Mersmann
Hello, parents and guardians. Reading is a semester class, so I have enjoyed getting to know your student. Together with support from home, I am optimistic that these students will excel beyond my expectations. To start off the semester, students explored central idea in nonfiction articles. Finding the central idea requires supporting evidence, and students searched diligently to find text evidence to back up their answers. Currently, students are continuing to work on finding the strongest text evidence to support an answer. To reinforce the students' understanding of these skills, we will use the RACES method for constructing short responses and the UNPACK method. In the next few weeks, your student should be able to craft a 6+ sentence response to any prompt with ease. I am proud of the work and progress students have made in understanding the state standards thus far. 8th Grade ELA - Mrs. Bevis and Mr. Wagner
January is the perfect backdrop for White Fang by Jack London. We are examining the setting, characters, and the characters’ motivations as we read this adventurous tale that takes place during the gold rush in the Yukon Territory. The vocabulary for this novel is a bit challenging, so students are strongly encouraged to study using Vocabulary.com. In addition to reading the novel, we are continuing to work on grammar usage and mechanics and decoding words based upon their Greek or Latin origins. Students should also be reading their own Accelerated Reader books to reach their individual goals by March 8, 2024.
8th Grade Advanced ELA - Mr. Wagner
There’s nothing quite like a titillating “whodunnit” novel for a gripping winter read. Naturally, one must turn to the “Queen of Crime” herself, Agatha Christie, to find such thrills. Students in my advanced ELA classes have just finished Part 1 of 3 in Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. In English class, we constantly teach the value of making both inferences and predictions, as well as engaging in close reading. Never do these skills become more useful than when one reads a murder mystery. I look forward to seeing the students develop their own unique theories concerning the killer and his or her motive before we reach the story’s resolution. Students should also be reading their independent AR books to meet their goal by March 8th.
8th Grade Honors ELA - Mr. Wagner
I think poet Christina Rossetti said it best when she first penned the line “In the bleak mid-winter,” for that’s precisely where we find ourselves. Without it is cold and dreary; however, within Room 108 students in honors ELA are enjoying the warmth and are currently exploring the exposition of our novel, October Sky by Homer Hickam, Jr. This memoir contains endless life lessons about perseverance, the power of knowledge, and most importantly, realizing what’s most important in one’s life before it is too late. Along with analyzing the plot, we have been investigating the numerous historical events that occurred during the time of this story. Students should be diligently working on their Quarter 3 creative writing assignment and be waist-deep in a marvelous book for AR. Happy reading!
Engineering
Engineering 6 and Engineering 7/8 are learning/reviewing our 3D modeling software...Autodesk Inventor. Students learn a different tool on a daily basis and then get to practice/freestyle their own designs.
Advanced Engineering
Advanced Engineering have started their Design Innovation presentations where they pic and research an original invention to present to their classmates. They are also in the process of 3D printing their Drink Coaster that they designed and personalized on Autodesk Inventor.
Spanish
Spanish class has been working hard learning about conjugating -ar verbs. We are using verbs to talk about our day in school and what we do outside of school. We will compare a typical day in the life of a student here and one in Latin America.
Athletics
The boys basketball season has come to an end. All teams showed great improvement over the season! The highlight of the year would have to be the 8th grade “B” team winning the Tri-County basketball tournament!!
Girls basketball and wrestling have started their regular seasons, and have proved their ability to compete at a high level. Please consider checking the game schedules on the school website, and coming to meet or game to show your support.
