World Down Syndrome Day is recognized globally on March 21 as a day dedicated to raising awareness about Down syndrome and promoting rights, inclusion and well-being of individuals with down syndrome. The date, March 21 was chosen to represent the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which is characteristic of Down syndrome. On this day, people world-wide come together to celebrate the abilities and achievements of individuals with Down syndrome, while advocating for their inclusion in all aspects of society.
At Natalie Kreeger Elementary, students and staff will celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by wearing mismatched socks and creating a wall of mismatched socks, symbolizing the uniqueness and individuality of people with Down syndrome, while also showing support for the global movement of inclusion and acceptance.
