Dear DPM Families,
On Tuesday night, Deer Path was the spotlight school at the District 67 Board of Education meeting. The DPM Admin team shared the many ways community service is embedded into the middle school experience. Then we were honored to invite our 23-24 President's Volunteer Service Award recipients, Maizy M. (8th grade) and Teddy P. (7th grade), to share about their experience getting involved with community service. They both shared how service not only enriches the lives of those they help, but how rewarding and fulfilling it is for the person providing the service as well.
In alignment with our Portrait of a Learner, we hope to develop an appreciation for civic engagement & our community through meaningful service for all of our students. Students should log their service hours using the DPM Community Service Form which can be found with additional information on the Community Service page under the Student Activities tab of the Deer Path website.
Thank you and have a restful weekend,
Dr. Michelle Shinn, 5/6 Principal
Mr. Sam Paulsen, 7/8 Principal

Lockdown Drill
Lockdown Drill Presentation
On Wednesday, September 24, we walked students through an emergency response presentation to inform students of our safety drill procedures. On Friday, October 4th, DPM will conduct a police assisted lockdown drill. The Illinois School Safety Drill Act (105 ILCS 128/20) requires schools to provide guardians an opportunity to exempt their child from participating in the drill. If you wish your student to be exempted from the law enforcement lockdown drill, please complete this form prior to October 4th.
If your student is exempted, the school will provide alternative safety education and instruction related to an active threat. These students will be provided with essential information, training, and instruction through less sensorial safety training methods.
Lost and Found
Our lost and found has filled up since the start of the school year: water bottles, jackets, hoodies, lunch bags, and more! Please help us reunite items with owners by putting student names on the things they bring to school. If your student is missing anything, please tell them to check the tables in the cafeteria or the lost and found bins outside of both main offices. Thank you!
*REPEAT* Cell Phone, Smartwatch, and Earbud Expectations
We are experiencing an increase in texting from smartwatches during the school day. Students are texting other students and parents during classes. Parents are also texting students. Expectations will be reviewed with students during Advisory next week. We ask that parents refrain from texting students during the school day, and contact the front office to relay information to students.
Cell phones need to be silenced and remain in student lockers (“off and away”) from the time students enter the building until dismissal. They are not allowed in bathrooms or hallways. Smartwatches should not be used for messaging or phone calls during the day. Earbuds must be out of the ears while in the building unless they are required by a teacher. Wired headphones are to be used with the district issued iPad.
Failure to follow the expectations the first time will result in a phone call home and review of the expectations. The second time will result in the device being turned into the front office. A third time and beyond will require a parent and student to meet with an administrator or dean to develop a plan.
Announcing Securly Pass for DPM
District 67 is committed to providing our students with a safe and secure learning environment. On October 1, DPM will implement Securly Pass, a digital hall pass system. Securly Pass will enhance the safety and security of our campus while minimizing disruptions to the learning environment. For more information, please click the button below to view our previous messaging regarding this from yesterday.

DPM APT News
Dear DPM Families,
Community service and giving back are key pillars of creating a successful adult as we prepare our children for the next step in school and real life.
The 8th graders started their year-long community service journey on Monday with an assembly and keynote speaker Brian Floriani, Bernie’s Book Bank Founder. Brian shared:
You will never lose when you put others first. That’s the definition of service.
Right now means everything. Don’t wait!
The importance of gratitude. Show gratitude to your teacher, parents, friends, siblings, strangers, or even a Starbucks worker.
Write more handwritten notes!
Next month, the 8th graders will hold a toiletry drive for Waukegan residents who attend the Great Full Market on Sunday, October 20. Please save the date for this wonderful community partnership with D115, Lake Bluff PTO, and Quest for food insecurity.
We’d love for your family to volunteer in person with us, but if you can’t attend, help underwrite the event by clicking here.
Did you know Advisory meets once a week for 20 minutes, and the average number of Advisory students is 11? With this small advisory size, we can reshape our APT Holiday Parties this year to ensure every student belongs!
5/6 Advisory Parent Info will be sent out this week. Thanks again to Elyse Butler and Gillian Goodfriend for coordinating this colossal task. Placing 35 Advisory Parents and working through the date/time of the parties, given the packed DPM learning schedule, was no easy task!
You should receive a welcome note from your 5/6 Advisory Parent soon noting the party dates and asking for volunteers. APT hosts three parties for Halloween, Holiday, and Valentine’s Day for fun and to promote friendship. We’re excited to welcome back parents into the classrooms for these parties, which you can thank Dr. Shinn and the 5/6 teacher teams for advocating for this partnership. Thank you in advance to our many parents and guardians for helping our teachers make these events creative and engaging!
7/8th will continue with grade-level parties, and more details will be shared closer to those dates. Thank you to Veronica DeNicolo, Mimi Pacelli, Cathy Montanari, and Rachel Kiley for serving as 7th-grade-level parents.
8th Grade Level parents Judy Kotsiopoulos and Kay Smith could you an extra hand or two, so if you’d like to join them please contact me and I’ll contact you.
Safety matters to everyone! In case you missed our second APT sponsored Community Safety series event save the date for the last one of Oct 7th when local police will join us to discuss the Internet and Crimes Against Children. Topics will be covered that our generation didn’t have to deal with as children like what to do If your child receives a questionable photo that they didn’t request or shares one and you’ll learn what to do. I can tell you with older kids how important this topic is as soon as kids have a phone. Educate yourself before an issue happens.
Cheers,
Kristin McCain, DPM APT President
