October Mid Month Newsletter
October Mid-Month Newsletter
Haymarket Elementary School
Hello Haymarket Cub Families,
It’s hard to believe we’ve reached mid-October, and the first nine weeks of school are coming to an end. The initial months have been busy with lots of fun learning and events. Parent Teacher Conferences are approaching, so please reach out to your child’s teacher if you haven’t already to schedule a time.
The past few weeks have brought on some exciting developments at Haymarket. We launched our Den system, and students are thrilled about our new initiative recognizing “pawsitive” behavior. Additionally, we kicked off our Boosterthon, aiming to raise $35,000 to go towards murals for the school, incentives for the Den program, school security, and revamping the sound system. Thank you for your ongoing support!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Mills and Mrs. Shore

Meet our School Security Assistant
Let's take a peek behind the scenes of the vital role that keeps our school safe and sound. One of the key parts of this position is access control—making sure all exterior and interior doors are checked throughout the day to ensure they're securely locked. We patrol the building and school grounds to help keep everything in line with security protocols and prevent any unauthorized access. When not patrolling, we monitor security cameras to spot any suspicious or concerning behavior.
Navigating traffic and parking at HMES, especially during arrival and dismissal times with buses, student drop-offs, walkers, and various before and after-school activities, is no small feat. I direct traffic and walkers to keep everyone moving efficiently and safely.
Throughout the school year, I help facilitate emergency drills and assist during real emergencies and requests for assistance. Even though much of this role is independent, there are plenty of opportunities to interact with students, school staff, administrators, parents, and Community Safety Officers. I’m here to assist students with their concerns, answer parent questions, and investigate and document any violations of the Code of Behavior.
We regularly test the school's crisis management plan to identify any gaps and ensure we're ready for any situation. Daily, I work to identify and correct safety issues, prevent accidents and injuries, and enforce Prince William County fire codes.
Beyond safety, this role is crucial in fostering a sense of community and connection within HMES. Together, we create a safe, welcoming environment for everyone.
Den System Kickoff!
Our Den System kickoff celebration was a tremendous success! Students were thrilled to find out which den they were in as they gathered with their teams. The excitement was contagious, with cheers echoing across the field as students chanted, "8 Dens 1 Forest."

Digital Citizenship Week
Next week, we will be celebrating National Digital Citizenship Week to promote online safety for our children. Throughout the week, we will engage in various activities, including video clips, discussion questions, and other classroom activities.
- Daily Videos: We will be sharing short videos on different Digital Citizenship topics and then having class discussions about each video every day next week.
- Family Activities: Each night, HMES will send home family activities via School Status and Facebook.
- Canvas Courses: These courses will contain all materials for our Digital Citizenship Week.
Why We’re Participating in Digital Citizenship Week
- To Promote Online Safety: With the increasing use of digital devices and social media among students, it’s essential to teach them how to navigate the online world safely and responsibly.
- To Build Good Digital Habits: By participating in this week, we aim to instill good digital habits that will help students make positive choices online.
- To Engage Families: We believe that involving families in these activities will reinforce the lessons learned at school and create a supportive environment for students.
- To Align with State Standards: This initiative aligns with the Digital Learning Integration Standards of Learning approved by the Virginia Board of Education, ensuring that our efforts are in line with state educational goals.
And, of course, this special week wouldn't be complete without dress up days!
Here's what to wear and topics for each day:
