A Message from the Principal
During the first week in May the Sioux City Community School District celebrates Staff Appreciation Week. This year that looks different with the (Covid 19) virus closure of our schools. As the principal of Bryant I have had the opportunity to surround myself with so many great people who work at this school and dedicate each day to serve our students. With the closure of the schools, teachers have reached out to connect with students virtually and this has been a challenge, but the Bryant staff has risen to the occasion and I am so proud of them! If you have time please consider to write a staff member an e-mail or note thanking them for all that they do.
The Voluntary Continuous Learning Packets for grades PK-5 continue to be distributed every two weeks. The next distribution will be on May 6th and the final distribution will be on May 20th. The packets can be picked up during the lunch distribution time (10:45-11:45). If you are unable to pick up a packet during this time or still need to pick up your child’s school supplies please e-mail the Bryant Office Manager, Cassie Foreman at foremac@live.siouxcityschools.com to arrange a time.
The end of the year is a time for many celebrations, such as field day, field trips and classroom parties. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our Bryant fifth grade students who will be moving onto Middle School. We will miss you and wish you the very best.
Finally, I want to thank everyone for your support you have given me during the past 12 years at Bryant as your principal. It has been a privilege to work with so many wonderful students and families. I will miss everyone but am looking forward to retirement and this new chapter in my life. Stay safe and continue to stay in touch!
Your principal,
Mrs. Kollars

From Mrs. Kaskie's Art Room
I have been missing all of my Bryant Bears! I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe! It will be nice to rejoin together and create more artwork in August. It has been a learning process not only for the students, but also for the teachers through the online learning.
You should have received links to weekly art projects on Class Dojo through my YouTube channel. My YouTube channel link is : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9zcZg7C8jV261tUvijgXbA?view_as=subscriber. By going to YouTube, you can search for Mrs. Kaskie’s Art and subscribe. By subscribing, it is an easier way to stay connected. If you are not connected on Dojo, the art lessons are posted on the Bryant Facebook page as well. My latest project is about making tie dyed coffee filters. J I love seeing your creations so please send them to me through YouTube or Class Dojo. I will also share your artwork on Dojo if you would like your classmates to see what you made.
Our annual ArtWorks show was cancelled due to Covid19. I have decided to make a virtual art show. A handful of student’s art will be featured in the video. The video will be shared with you soon.
Art is a great way to use your imagination and be creative. Keep creating every day! I have found creating art is a great escape from all the things that are out of our control in the world right now. Remember to send me pictures of your creations!
Notes from the Resource Rooms
Mrs. Konda's room:
This year in Mrs. Konda’s room, we focused on the basics of reading, math and writing. In reading, many students worked on phonics skills, decoding, and fluency and increased their FAST scores! Basic facts are the cornerstone of math, so we practiced addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts every day. Some students made it all the way to division in one year. That is very exciting! In writing class, we learned to organize and sequence thoughts into sentences that make sense. Students practiced always using a capital at the beginning of a sentence and punctuation at the end. Although we are not in the classroom during the pandemic, I hope my students are continuing to practice basic skills at home. Some websites you can use at home are:

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in the fall. Stay safe and take care!

Mrs. Cobbs’s room:
This year has been so exciting with the new building. It is nice to be back “home”. There have been a lot of new things this year including how our year ended. While things haven’t gone as planned, we are still here for the students and their families. I am fortunate that I have been able to still connect with students through email, letters, and Zoom calls.
Since this time can be trying on everyone, there are some great websites that can assist students with social emotional learning (SEL). This is an area that is just as important as academic skills.
My favorite website for SEL understanding and growth is Emotional ABCs. They offer free subscriptions for parents: https://www.emotionalabcs.com/.
Please continue to connect with those around you! Especially your teachers ;)

From your PE Coach
What’s up Bryant Bears! I hope everybody is well. Well, I have been teaching for the Sioux City School District for 15 years, and I can honestly say the 19-20 school year has by far been the most interesting. To start, we finally had the grand opening of our brand new Bryant Elementary school. Everything about our new school was better than I could ever image. You want to know what’s weird? Every day as I turn the corner to Bryant, for a split second I think I’m going to see my old PE black top. Then, that beautiful school comes into focus, and I get all excited inside. We have been waiting to have PE in an awesome gym for three years, and this year we finally made it. Wide space and plenty of equipment to go around. I love to see all the boys and girls having a great time learning new skills in a gym fit for a king. New equipment, new lessons, and then all this wild COVID-19 hit our country. It is very sad that we are not together this time of year, but it is for the best. Please, take care of yourselves by following all the necessary precautions to stay safe and healthy.
I hope everyone is staying active as you can be. Below are a couple links with some great activities that you can perform at home or in your back yard. The first link is a Lego workout game that looks easy to follow, and very fun. The second link is a PE newsletter that has a ton of different workouts and activities that incorporate other things you have learned in school. Before you attempt these workouts and activities, make sure you ask your parents, and stay within the guidelines of social distancing to stay safe and healthy.
With a lot of patience, and healthy choices we will get through this global pandemic together. I have all the confidence in the world that all of you are doing everything you can to stay positive, active, healthy, and safe. I will see you all next fall, so be ready to hit the gym floor running.

The immunization requirements apply to ALL individuals attending licensed childcare centers and schools in Iowa; including those who are home schooled. A Certificate of Immunization must be submitted to the licensed childcare center or school the child will attend. If your child needs to receive any further immunizations (boosters), the required immunization(s) can be obtained from your child’s doctor, or from the Siouxland District Health Department. The immunizations can be received at your physician’s office if:
· Immunizations are covered by your health insurance.
· Your children have health insurance through HAWK-I.
· Your children receive Medicaid (Title 19).
The immunizations can be received at the Siouxland District Health Department if:
· Your children are 0 through 18 years of age.

· You have no health insurance for your children.
· Your children are of Native American or Alaskan native descent.

It is the responsibility of the parent to provide the school with a copy of their child’s immunization record. It is important to maintain immunization records in a safe place. Proof of immunizations may be necessary throughout life. View Iowa immunization requirements: http://www.idph.state.ia.us/adper/common/pdf/immunization/products/immunization_law.pdf

2020 Census - Every Person Counts
Census Day is observed on April 1, 2020. Households begin receiving invitations to participate in the Census in mid-March. There are three ways to complete the census – online, by phone, or by mail – and the Census Bureau provides forms in 14 languages. It’s important that every household participate and that every person is counted.

How Census Data Is Used
The 2020 Census will determine congressional representation, inform hundreds of billions in federal funding for public programs like schools, and provide data that will impact communities for the next decade. Learn More.
Confidentiality
The answers you provide are used only to produce statistics. You are kept anonymous. The Census Bureau is not permitted to publicly release your responses in any way that could identify you or anyone else in your home.

Census Data And The Impact on Public Schools
Public schools in Iowa will be directly impacted by the 2020 census. The 2010 census estimated there were 731,975 children in Iowa ages 0-18. Children ages 0-4 are typically undercounted, and Iowa estimates 4,726 children were not included in the census.
Iowa receives over $8 billion annually from the federal government based on population estimates from the 2010 census, including funds for Special Education Grants, the National School Breakfast & Lunch Programs, Head Start, and many other education programs vital to the success of Iowa’s children. Those 4,726 children who weren’t counted in 2010 are now in grades 6-9, and the state has lost out on millions of dollars in federal funding each year for those children’s education.
We cannot let the census become another barrier to the funding of our student’s educations. The Sioux City Community School District is asking for the help and support of all families in our district to ensure that every child is counted.
Help us make sure the students of our district receive the funding they deserve. Help us make sure all kids are counted!
