KEWASKUM DISTRICT NEWS
MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR
Last month we went into detail about the first part of the Kewaskum Difference:
- We COMPETE in a global society by offering dual credit and college/career readiness.
- We educate the WHOLE child by involving the community.
- We have that SMALL TOWN FEEL with personal attention.
This month I’d like to dive into the second aspect, “We educate the WHOLE child by involving the community.”
So what does it mean to educate the whole child by involving the community? We believe a well-rounded education goes beyond traditional academics. We work on developing their social, character, and emotional development as well. We want students to thrive in all areas.
At the younger grades, we have four work habits we instill in our lessons.
Effort–Strive for Excellence. We teach students the importance of continually trying to improve, completing their work, and demonstrating perseverance when they struggle.
Participation–Work in a Positive Manner. We ask students to meaningfully participate in class, demonstrate active listening, and cooperate in the classroom
Respect–Treat Others the Way You Want to be Treated. We show students how to demonstrate self-discipline, respect property, and act with honesty and integrity
Responsibility–Do What Needs to be Done. This involves students meeting deadlines, being prepared for class, and fulfilling expectations.
At the middle and high school levels, we have numerous student groups with a focus on community contribution. Two great examples are our Builders Club at the middle school and our Key Club at the high school. Both student groups host events and collaborate with other community organizations to raise money for worthy causes.
We routinely have guest speakers and community organizations/business speak with our students about a variety of topics such as career exploration to local history to fire safety. Our community is filled with so many experts, and we want to give them opportunities to share their specialized knowledge.
Our community-integrated approach ensures that our students receive a comprehensive education. By involving the community in our educational process, we're able to offer unique learning experiences, develop well-rounded individuals, and prepare our students for success in both our local community and the wider world.
