March Madness!
Each student will log their daily reading onto the paper reading log and once a week will enter their total weekly minutes into an online database. The database to enter minutes for the week will close on Friday mornings at 10:00 am. (Please note that due to the Good Friday holiday students will enter their minutes on Thursday, March 28 for that week only.) We encourage students to enter their minutes from home every Thursday evening or Friday morning before they come to school. However, if they are unable to do this, they can enter their minutes at school on Friday morning. To access the online database, go to http://www.newton.k12.ma.us/peirce and look under the “Peirce Pride, News and Special Events” section for March Madness. We will accept a maximum of 1,260 minutes per week/per child. That is an average of 3 hours per day. This rule will apply to every week – even the weeks that are shorter/longer due to the Good Friday holiday. Students should hand in the paper copy of their reading log to their classroom teacher every Friday morning. It must have an adult signature! Students should begin to log their weekly minutes read into the online database on Thursday, March 14 and continue to log their weekly minutes read every week up until Thursday, April 4. Team points earned will be tallied and recorded every week onto a graph in the main hallway. Books read in school are not eligible for points. Books read as part of nightly reading can be counted. March Madness reading does not have to be in addition to regular home reading. There will be a separate point system for grades K-1 and for grades 2-5. Two winning teams will earn an extra PE class with Mr. Nye!
If anyone needs access to books for this reading celebration please do not hesitate to reach out to Brett Aronne, Literacy Specialist (aronneb@newton.k12.ma.us) or Morgan Harper, Library Teacher (harpermo@newton.k21.ma.us).
Newtonville Books Fundraiser
Support your March Madness-reader, Newtonville Books, and the Peirce PTO - all at the same time!
The Peirce PTO has partnered with Newtonville Books for the upcoming March Madness reading competition! From this Friday (3/8) through the end of March, shop at Newtonville Books and a portion of total sales from Peirce customers will be donated back to the PTO. You can visit the store in person (10 Langley Rd, Newton Centre) or purchase books online (newtonvillebooks.com). Simply identify yourself as a member of the Peirce community while checking out at the register or in the comments section of your online order. This is a great opportunity to stock up on books for March Madness while supporting a local business and our school.
State of the School Address
You are invited to Peirce's annual State of the School Address on March 21st. Learn more about our current performance as a school and discuss our progress toward instructional and other important goal areas. In addition to the morning coffee at 8:15 AM, an evening presentation will be held at 7:00 via Google Meet (link shared next week). Bring your thoughtful questions and creative ideas!

What's something that makes you unique?
I’m a combination of many things, most of which are not unique on their own, but, when you put them together, they make a unique combination. Here is one– I have a group of friends where we all like to cook and try new foods. Every other month, we pick a country and come together for a dinner where everyone makes a different course, based on the cuisine of that country. Whoever is hosting also shares a little something about the culture of the chosen country.
Who inspires you?
People who face a challenging situation and don't give up.
What is the best part of your job?
Seeing those “ah-ha” moments when someone who didn’t understand a math idea perseveres until they get it.
Chairperson Needed for NewtonServes!
NewtonServes! Is an annual citywide event that focuses on building community through the clean up and “greening” of public spaces. This one-day event spans across many sites in Newton and traditionally the Peirce school grounds have been a designated site. Past efforts at Peirce have included clearing debris and spreading mulch, trimming branches, tidying flower beds and adding new plantings. The Chairperson is responsible for identifying the needs and scope of the work to be done. They also serve as a liaison with the City planning team and organize the volunteers.
The PTO is seeking a volunteer (or duo) to lead our Newton Serves initiative this spring. NewtonServes! Will be held on May 5th this year and this role will require additional planning time prior to the 5th. If you are interested in learning more about the lead role, please look here for more details. Any questions, please reach out to Jaime Mason at peircepres2@gmail.com
