Villa Park Ice Hockey Wins Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League Division 3 Championship
The Villa Park Spartans ice hockey team won both their conference and division championship this past weekend in a pair of thrilling games at Great Park Ice Arena in Irvine. On Friday night, they played their closest game of the playoffs against the Saddleback United Wranglers, a nailbiter in which the Spartans trailed 4-2 in the third period, but came back to tie the game on goals by Noah Veiga and David Paterson. The game went to overtime and then a shootout to decide the Conference Champion. Goalie Calvin Vician came up huge in the shootout, making all three saves, and Ronnie Felikian converted on his chance to bring home a heartstopping win. It pushed the Spartans into the division championship game against the Inland Empire United Wolverines, a team that beat the Spartans twice during the regular season. It would be the final substantial mountain to climb and if the Spartans could win, they would have beaten three of the teams in the league with the best regular-season records.
The division championship game on Saturday night was largely quiet until the parade to the penalty box began. Whereas the Spartans couldn't convert on the power play at all in Friday's game against the Wranglers, the power play would be the difference in this game when the Spartans converted four power play goals due to some undisciplined play by the Wolverines, including a key hitting-from-behind major penalty when the game was tied 3-3. On the ensuing Spartans power play, defenseman Connor McDermott acted as the hero scoring both the game-winning goal as well as an insurance goal to bring home Villa Park's first Division 3 ice hockey championship. The celebration was on and the Commissioner's Cup now resides in Villa Park. As senior Spartan Aaron Keener stated loudly in the locker room post game, this means, "Villa Park is now a hockey school!!!" Follow @vpspartanshockey on Instagram and support the team as the reigning Valley Conference Champions now look forward to the 2025-2026 season!
