May celebrations!
Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
This month we reflect and celebrate the important role that Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) have played in our shared history, and celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures, traditions, and achievements of AANHPI communities. AANHPI Heritage Month shines a light on the incredible diversity within these communities and the vibrant cultures, languages, traditions, and cuisines of Asian and Pacific Islander regions.
Teacher Appreciation Week was May 6-10
Congratulations, retirees!
We held our annual retiree celebration during our May 16 School Board meeting (which was held in the dark due to a power outage!).
We want to recognize and honor these dedicated employees - not only for their years of service to our District and our students, but as our friends and colleagues, who are forever a part of our legacy.
We send a warm congratulations and a sincere thank you out to ALL of our retirees. They will be missed! We invite you to view the retiree bios, and check out photos from the event!

Students earn AP Capstone honors
"AP Capstone™ is an Advanced Placement (AP) program based on two year- long AP courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. Rather than teaching subject-specific content, these courses develop students’ skills in research, analysis, evidence-based arguments, collaboration, writing, and presenting. Students who complete the two-year program can earn one of two different AP Capstone awards, which are valued by colleges across the United States and around the world.
Capstone Night (see photo above) is an important part of the journey for students in the program as their research culminates in displays and presentations to an authentic audience of school and community members. Students are able to discuss their inquiry process and results with guests and answer questions that lead to even more learning and new questions, sparking further engagement.
Four students were recognized as AP Capstone Diploma candidates, an honor that requires students to complete AP Seminar and AP Research with an exam score of 3 (out of 5) or higher and an additional four AP courses with exam scores of 3 or higher. Honor Cords for this achievement, the pinnacle of the Advanced Placement program, went to: Attianna Cabato, Claire Cortez, Dillon Lovestedt, and Helene Rode.

MVMS students visit Olympic College
Mountain View Middle School 6th and 8th eighth grade AVID students recently visited Olympic College (see photo below).
The 6th graders attended an OC college admissions talk and campus tour. Highlights from the tour included visiting the state of the art nursing program, where highly technical tools aid in professional development.
The 8th grade students included AVID students and other student leaders who engaged in small group interviews, rotating with OC’s leaders who shared about their life experiences and professional paths. This activity was based on a format known as RoadTrip Nation. Our students were very inspired by this experience!

2024 Collective Visions Gallery BHS art show
More than 99 pieces of student artwork was on display during the month of May for the Collective Visions Gallery BHS art show. As noted in our April newsletter, the annual art show kicked-off with a celebration during First Friday Artwalk.
About 50 different art pieces came from the Production Art Class, with teacher and professional artist Alixandra Mullins. There were projects ranging from hand-illustrated graphic novel panels, to acrylic painting, ink on canvas and illustrations with watercolor. Students at BHS have been exploring many different art 2-D illustrative art mediums and styles of creating visual art.
The ceramics class, instructed by Erik Painter had all sorts of beautiful pots and lanterns on display. Projects ranged from hand-pinched pots, bowls to slab made lanterns with candles in them. The photography class, taught by Jay Montgomery, displayed a wide range of photographs, ranging from macro imagery to landscape styled work.
Well done, artists!
Naval Avenue Elementary Garden Tours
As you may have seen in previous newsletters, staff, students and volunteers at Naval Avenue Elementary have created an edible school garden for students and the community.
This month, all Naval Avenue students toured the garden with their classmates, participating in a short garden activity. Students also participated in a follow up activity in their classrooms!
BHS ASB Update
Greetings from the Bremerton High School ASB! We have been quite busy for the last few months as we near the end of our academic year. From a successful constitutional convention (photo, right) to an exhilarating kickball tournament, we have finally reached the end of our term as the ASB. Throughout the year, we planned exciting pep assemblies and events for our students.
One event we would like to put a special emphasis on would be our Multicultural Festival. This event included an assembly and after school event that highlighted the diversity of Bremerton. This was not just an assembly, but an opportunity to emphasize the importance of belonging. We were striving to create an event which allowed all components that make up our student body to be showcased and celebrated. This was the first Multicultural Festival put on by the ASB in many years and I am extremely proud of all of our hard work. We hope this is an event that grows and continues to live on for many years to come.
ASB also held a Rochambeau Tournament in which students were given the opportunity to meet others through playing a simple game. Students were given a bead necklace and would compete in games to steal another student’s necklace. At the end, whoever had the most necklaces won the tournament! The school was buzzing with excitement, not only students, but teachers as well as they were also given necklaces.
The Sweetheart Swirl, run by our Class of 2025 student council, and Prom, run by our Class of 2024 student council, were successful as well. The Sweetheart Swirl was the first winter/spring dance run by the junior class in a long time. We are so extremely proud of the student councils and the efforts they have made towards their classes. These events, and so much more, were highlighted as well at our final ASB presentation to Bremerton Rotary this last week.
Through the amazing individuals on ASB, student council, as well as our dedicated advisor, Elise Erickson, we have had an exceptional year for ASB at Bremerton High School. Although I can only dream of so much more we could have done, I hope through our efforts, we have made a lasting impact on students and created new traditions that will live on.

MVMS teacher honored with Earth Day Award
Mountain View Middle School teacher Lisa Gordon was honored with an award for environmental stewardship by Kitsap County Public Works and the Board of County Commissioners. The Earth Day Award celebrates community members whose contributions enhance, preserve, and protect our local environment. The award also honors the dedication community members have to making Kitsap a healthy, beautiful community for all.
She was nominated by the Great Peninsula Conservancy for her innovative approach of bringing the outdoors to students and creating opportunities for her students to have a dedicated green space to learn about the environment.
In the fall of 2022, a new class, Outdoor Leadership, was offered at MVMS. It was designed by teacher Lisa Gordon to provide students with life and leadership skill development consisting of hands-on activities while engaging with the natural environment.
The Great Peninsula Conservancy joined the effort to help students learn about stewardship and understand systems of the natural world with their weekly “Land Lab” science projects. A visiting educator and team of Vista-Corp volunteers offer engaging lessons and host students at land trust locations for field trips.
Congratulations, Lisa!

Bond program: What's next?
We are excited to share an important milestone in our bond program. After a thorough and competitive selection process, we are pleased to recommend the appointment of our new
project management team (OAC) to the School Board at the June 6 meeting.
Our project management team was chosen for their extensive experience with leading K-12 construction projects. We are especially excited that the two project managers working on our Bond program are actual members of the Bremerton community.
The initial phase of our bond program is now underway, with immediate efforts focused on pre-
design preparations and project team selection. Throughout the summer, we’ll be completing land
surveys and other necessary assessments for the key projects and working on finalizing the
phasing of work to maximize the use of your tax dollars.
We are committed to keeping the community informed and engaged throughout this journey,
and we look forward to sharing regular updates on our progress. Thank you again for your
support!
