Shades Mountain News
Last Week Edition
From The Principal....
Let me say it again....THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! You made our annual FIELD DAY the BEST EVER!!!! I know that I threw you a curve and changed the date at the last minute but you just rolled with it. Without you, there is no field day for our students. Honestly, my favorite part was watching you play the games with the kids. Who knew that you were so good at Ga-Ga Ball and stacking cups. Just know how much we appreciate you for the sacrifices that you make for our school. Shades Mountain parents are the best. If you could not attend, not to worry because we will do it again next year.
Speaking of next year, our district has adopted Circool to be our way of attending campus events. It is new so we have been given some grace to figure out how to use it but starting next year, you will not be able to attend any HCS on campus events without having a scan in code through Circool. Be sure and use the Circool software is you are planning to be on campus. We will be using it this week to check in guests for the third grade picnic and the 5th grade graduation. Call the school if you need assistance with the app.
We need to have ALL returning students complete on-line registration by May 24th. Currently, we are no where close to having that done. Please consider going online and completing this for me. Also, if you meet new families with school age children, please tell them to stop by the school and register their children for school. My staffing is tied to our enrollment numbers. I want to keep all of my staff and ask for even more to keep our class size numbers low. My ability to staff my building is tied to our enrollment numbers...plain and simple. It really is important for you to register now.
There are only 4 days of school remaining. Please remind our students to make good choices while at school. Some of our friends are getting a little loose with the school rules. I have told teachers to keep teaching and to enforce the Code of Conduct. I love them but if our students break the rules then we have to hold them accountable and offer a consequence.
See you on Monday. Don't forget to smile.
Have a wonderful weekend.

From The Nurse
Dear Parent/Guardian,
The end of the school year requires some housekeeping tasks throughout the
school. The health room is no exception.
An adult will be required to pick up any medications that your child may have in the
health room. Medications should be picked up by noon on Thursday, May 23, 2024.
Any medications left at school will be destroyed after noon on May 23. No
exceptions.
When your child returns to school in August a new medication form with parent and
physician signature will be required. This will be sent to you along with a Health
Care Plan for next year (if one is required) that you will need to sign and return
along with the medication and the form. One form will be required for each
medication brought to school for the 2024-2025 school year.
If you have any questions please call me at 205-439-3130.
Have a safe and happy summer☺
PS: The Jefferson County Department of Health is offering vaccination clinics every Thursday in April, May, and June from 1:00 - 4:00 pm. Multiple insurances accepted. Please call 205-588-5234 for additional information.

Cafeteria:
May Sign-Up. We use Signup Genius as our method to know that you are coming to eat lunch. PLEASE FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES LISTED IN THAT DOCUMENT. Let me reemphasize the need to strictly follow the guidelines. Please do not bring fast food into our building. I cannot allow anything to be in direct competition with our cafeteria. It is my job to make sure that we are in compliance or I will not be allowed to have parents on campus for lunch. I hope that you understand. Please call me or email if I can clarify anything about that for you.

GIFTED EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Gifted/enrichment students are those who perform at or who have demonstrated the potential to perform at high levels in academic or creative fields when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment. These students require services not ordinarily provided by the regular school program. Students possessing these abilities can be found in all populations, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor.
Teachers, counselors, administrators, parents/guardians, peers, self, or any other individuals with knowledge of the student’s abilities may refer a student. Additionally, all second grade students will be observed as potential gifted referrals using a gifted behavior checklist.
For each student referred, information is gathered in the areas of Aptitude, Characteristics, and Performance. The information is entered on a matrix where points are assigned according to established criteria. The total number of points earned determines if the student qualifies for gifted services.
To make a referral, contact our enrichment teacher, Mrs. Nancy McGowan, at nmcgowan@hoover.k12.al.us.
