From improved decoding and encoding abilities to significant strides in fluency and comprehension, it’s been inspiring to witness their growth. As we head into the Spring semester, we are excited to continue building on these foundational skills, while fostering a growing confidence in each student as both a reader and a writer. Phonological awareness is the broad skill that includes recognizing sounds at the level of syllables, onsets, and rimes, while phonemic awareness is a more specific aspect of it, focusing on the ability to identify and manipulate individual phonemes, the smallest units of sound. Heavy work, such as pushing, pulling, and lifting, is crucial for young students as it helps develop their proprioception, improves focus, and supports emotional regulation. Research shows that activities involving heavy work can enhance sensory processing and attention in children, leading to better learning outcomes (Pfeiffer et al., 2011).
