In an effort to reduce milk waste and manage costs more effectively, we are making some changes to our milk distribution at snack time for students in grades 1-6. Moving forward, we ask that families who wish to purchase milk for their children at snack time complete the attached form. This will allow us to distribute milk more accurately and ensure that funds are collected appropriately.

Please take a moment to fill out the form and indicate which of your students you would like to receive milk during snack time It's important to note that students receive a free carton of milk each day during school breakfast and lunch. However, milk is only free at lunch if the student takes the school meal. Otherwise, students in grades K-6 will be charged $0.60 at lunchtime for their milk.

Milk distribution at snack will begin September 9th, 2024. We will add students to the list and milk will be delivered to students during their scheduled snack times.

Cost per milk $0.60:

• Quarter 1 - 9/9/24-10/31/24 (37 school days) = $22.20
• Quarter 2- 11/5/24-1/17/25 (41 school days)= $24.60
• Quarter 3- 1/21/25-3/21/25 (42 school days)= $25.20
• Quarter 4- 3/31/25-5/28/25 (40 school days) = $24.00
• Total cost for milk = $96.00

All school meals are served with milk, vegetable and fruit options. The alternative for the week is a crispy chicken wrap.

n this week's newsletter, we are excited to highlight our CharacterStrong trait of Respect in action! Our 4th-grade students have been showing respect for one another by taking time during recess to get to know each other using the Simply Talk conversation starter cards in the calm-down tool bags. Sitting on the benches, they are building stronger relationships and practicing respectful communication. Thank you, 4th graders, for demonstrating such strong character skills on the playground! Keep up the great work!

In a creative twist on hands-on learning, Mrs. Levenick's kindergarten class is utilizing a new salon station during free play. To provide authentic real-world experience, Mrs. Levenick donned a beard, allowing students to practice shaving and hair-cutting techniques. This engaging activity not only enhances motor skills but also introduces basic grooming concepts, seamlessly integrating our pillars of continuous improvement and real-world learning opportunities. Thanks Mrs. Levenick for letting us share this picture of students learning!

n line with our pillar of continuous improvement in student achievement, Mrs. Meyer's class is making great strides in literacy through engaging literacy centers. Students rotate through stations, participating in hands-on activities that strengthen their reading, writing, and comprehension skills. These interactive centers allow students to explore various aspects of literacy while fostering a love for learning. We’re excited to see their growth as they continue to build essential skills in creative and meaningful ways!

This week, our 4th graders turned the board game Candy Land into a fun math review, solving problems to move across the board. By combining learning with play, students reinforced their math skills through collaboration and problem-solving. This creative approach supports Houston Elementary’s pillar of Continuous Improvement Partnerships and Real-World Learning, showing that learning happens everywhere—even in games!
