VALUE of the MONTH: UNDERSTANDING
Principal's Message
Dear SGB Families,
I know this is long…I feel it's important for each of you to get to know me better. Each week, I will share in an effort to continue building our relationship. Please feel free to scroll and come back another time if that helps.

SGB attended our first school Mass of the year last Friday on the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The Gospel shared the message that will be the foundation for our school year, “take care of each other.”
In the Gospel, Jesus was dying and His mother, Mary, stayed with him through it all. He said to her, “Mother, this is your son” (acknowledging one of his disciples) and turned to the disciple and said, “This is your mother. Take care of each other.”
What a beautiful message! I always try to see in what way I have lived or experienced our faith. The first examples that flood my memories are the ones my own mother made for us growing up.
My Mom was born in Ireland and was brought up Catholic. She was the best example I ever had of truly living our faith. I remember when I was in 2nd grade and she gave me a choice, to go on the 2nd grade class trip to the circus or to attend a distant relative’s funeral. Being 7, I opted for the circus. I had no idea how that funeral would change my life even though I never attended.
The relative who passed away was a young mother. She had two little boys, who were 4 and 2. My mother stepped forward to take care of the boys after their Mom passed away while their father was at work. At first, it was more like babysitting. After only a short time, the boys father also passed away. Without hesitation, our family increased and these two little boys became my brothers. “Take care of each other.”
It wasn’t easy. My father was a police officer and my Mom stayed home to take care of all of us. Money was tight and now our family had grown. As you can imagine, it was also hard emotionally as the youngest who lost his Mom at age 2 had the hardest time and didn’t speak for years.
My Mom never wavered. She dedicated her entire life to our family, all of us. She dedicated her life to living her faith. Decades later, those two little boys have grown into my brothers whom I can not imagine my life without.
It will not always be an easy path, but we are called to “take care of each other.”
Right now, I can not think of better SGB role models of “taking care of each other” than our 8th grade bus monitors during our first days/weeks of school. They have been AMAZING! Each one has stepped up to make sure their group was in the right spot, all were accounted for and if anyone was not in the right place they jumped into action. I am BEYOND proud of their leadership and how well they have taken care of their SGB peers.
It has not been an easy start with bus transportation this year. Districts canceled routes last minute, changed stops, changed routes, combined routes and had some of our students traveling on buses for over an hour which in turn tripled our car riders. These changes happened daily and the stress was high for everyone at SGB to get it right no matter what change was thrown at us each afternoon. The following 8th graders played a vital role in our success, along with our dedicated SGB teachers and especially 💕Mrs. Schweitzer 💕who daily went through each change under a microscope!

Back to School Night
St. Gregory Barbarigo School will host "Back to School Night" on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 6:30pm. It will begin with an opening prayer in the auditorium, followed by introductions and a welcome message. Then, parents (only) will attend a classroom presentation as well as a presentation in the Parish Center with Ms. Clarke.
We will have 8th grade helpers available to guide parents to their child's classrooms if needed. Thanks to our graduating class of 2023, SGB has beautiful signs in the hallway making it very easy to locate your child's classroom.
The 8th grade parents will also have their 8th Grade Parent Meeting at 7:45PM. It will be held in the auditorium or Mrs. Scanlon's classroom. She will let you know that evening during the team presentation.
Below is the schedule. There are 2 identical classroom presentations available if you have more than one child, so you can attend multiple classrooms. Please select the one that works best for you, as well as the Parish Center presentation.
Thank you!
