Easing Separation Anxiety for Little Ones by Mrs. Wortinger
Change can be hard. Transitions can be rough. However, when the transitions become a routine and the routine becomes a new normal you will see smiling, happy, and engaged students. At Westview Elementary we understand that this is the first school experience for your little ones. We are learning and growing together as a team. Parents, students, and educators work hand-in-hand on what is best for your child.
Drop-off may be a challenging time for both the parent and the child. Here are a few tips on how to make your drop-off stress free:
Make sure to set the alarm clock. This means making sure you have plenty of time to sit down with your child while having a relaxing breakfast. Children are smart cookies. If they see you are feeling rushed their anxiety will grow. Be mindful of the time and understand that you may need to have a few extra minutes to help calm any anxieties your child may have regarding drop-off.
As a mom myself, I completely understand wanting to tell your child that you will miss them so much while they are at school. Unfortunately, doing this can create even bigger anxiety for your child. If you, as the parent, are struggling with separation anxiety yourself, talk to other parents of little ones for help, guidance, and reassurance.
As you are dropping off your little one, point out the fun things you see! Check out the playground, the cubbies, and all the amazing toys your child will be able to interact with shortly! We have found it to be very helpful if our parents point out items in our classrooms that their child will love!
It’s okay to acknowledge the way your little one is feeling. This is a great time to read a book together or ask the teacher for help! Our classroom teachers have a lot of experience in this area. They are there to help alleviate any stress you or your child may be feeling. When dropping off your child with their teacher, make sure to remind them that their teacher will take great care of them. Then take the cue and make a swift exit, making sure to say good-bye. You can always call the classroom teacher later to check on your little one.
