Here At JRB

Congratulations To Our Finalists
We had a tremendous spelling bee this week. Mr. C made a comment that we had never made it to the level of words that we used this year. That is awesome to hear. Our crowd was great and supportive, and the spellers were on point and focused! Congrats to Savina, Jase, and Cam for being the final three.

JRB Library Challenge and New Books
Each week through March, our library volunteers will display a selection of books with a “writing challenge” posted on a bookmark. The challenge is optional and serves to encourage participants to do some fun writing, and read books from a different genre than they normally would.
Every participant who completes the challenge is rewarded with a small prize, and a chance to win a larger art-related or reading-related prize.
Here are a few of our winners who participated in our fairytale challenge! Congratulations to Ryleigh (2CJ), Charley and Cash (1JC)
Moreover, with the help of our volunteers, we were able to purchase hundreds of new books for our library. Some of these newly purchased books will be part of our writing challenge, for which participants are asked to write a brief book review of their book for their peers.
We all look forward to reading their responses!
Call for more volunteers
Our library operates with the help of a small group of volunteers. Among other things, our volunteers help the children find and check out books, and provide a fun reading experience. We could use the help of a few more volunteers! If you are available on Thursdays or Fridays and want to help, or if you have questions, please email Julieann Tamayo at julieanntamayo@gmail.com.
Music Room News
Kindergarteners have been busy learning how to read and play color-coded music notes on our Boomwhackers, which are different colored and sized plastic tubes hit on one hand, each having its own pitch. Ask your child which song is their favorite that we have played so far!
1st & 2nd graders have been learning how to play the melody and chords of songs simultaneously on our Boomwhackers, which are colored plastic tubes hit with the hand. Some classes have also begun playing these songs on our colored bells! Ask your child to explain what the difference is between the melody and chords of a song!
3rd, 4th, & 5th graders are wrapping up their songwriting unit, where students compose their own 4-measure song and then play it on our xylophones and metallophones. This unit reinforces their note-reading skills, which carry over into the playing of other instruments. Ask your child the elements needed in writing a song!
3rd graders will also begin learning how to play the Recorder in the coming weeks, which is a woodwind instrument that will help them in learning how to play and read pitches for potential future instruments. Be on the lookout for a purple form going home to parents, which has information about the instrument. Be sure to sign and return the bottom portion of the form to your child’s teacher, so that your child can be issued an instrument during their next rotation of music. Any questions, please contact Mrs. Lordan: mlordan@awrsd.org
