A Message from the Administrative Team
Dear WJHS Families,
We have two things happening at once on Monday, with IAR testing beginning and the solar eclipse. We choose our testing dates over the summer and did not realize that these two things would happen simultaneously, but have worked to accommodate both of them. Below you will see the communication I sent earlier this week about our plans for the solar eclipse. Underneath the message from the administrative team you will see some IAR reminders - thank you for taking time to read this important information!
We are excited to announce that we will be celebrating the upcoming solar eclipse on Monday, April 8th. Although our viewing area won't experience totality, we will still get to enjoy an estimated 95% coverage of the sun.
We are planning to take all the students outside to observe this natural phenomenon. The eclipse is scheduled to begin at 12:51 pm in our area and will reach its peak at around 2:07 pm. Classroom teachers will take their students outside at some point during this window to witness the eclipse. However, it is essential to note that the American Astronomical Society recommends wearing special glasses at all times while viewing a solar eclipse to protect eyes from the sun's harmful rays.
Wearing glasses will be important for our students to safely enjoy eclipse viewing. Therefore, our building has purchased ISO-compliant glasses for all students to help ensure their safety. We ask for your support in speaking with your child in advance of April 8th about the importance of following teacher direction and wearing glasses while viewing the eclipse. If, for any reason, you do not want your child to participate in viewing the eclipse, please complete this opt-out form by end-of-day and we will provide an alternative location for your child during this time.
It's hard to believe that we only have two more months of school left - the years go so fast!
Have a great weekend!
Best,
Kate, Eric and Nicole
Tech Tidbit - IAR Testing Reminders!
Here are a few reminders to help students be prepared for their day:
Arrive to school with their iPad - loaners are only for ipads that have issues or need repairs. Please help your child remember to bring their iPad to school every day.
iPad should be fully charged - Students might need reminders to make sure they plug in their iPads at night. Some families have found that having a charging station somewhere in the house is helpful..
Have a pair of plug-in earbuds/headphones - this is on the school supply list. Just like other supplies, such as pencils, students should have these with them at all times during the day.
If students are having trouble with their iPads charging or any other issues, they can request iPad support by emailing support@wilmette39.org or by using the iPad Support App on their iPad. Tech support is also available in the LC before school, during lunch and after school. If the technician isn’t available in the LC, there is a kiosk for students to put in a support ticket.

April SEL
Beginning April 22 and running through May 3, students in grades 5-8 will be participating in the Panorama MESH (Mindsets, Essential Skills and Habits) assessment of social-emotional competencies and school environment. The MESH is comprised of a series of questions that cover the areas of Self-Management, Social Awareness, and Emotion Regulation. It also looks at Supportive Relationships at school, School Safety, Sense of Belonging, and Valuing of School.
This assessment aligns with the SEL competencies taught using our Responsive Classroom curricular materials, and results from the assessments are used to help us as we continue to gauge the effectiveness of our social-emotional supports and programming in the district. For more information about the social-emotional objectives at your child’s grade level, and other general information about SEL in District 39, please visit the D39 Social Emotional Learning Website.

Classroom Air Conditioning Update
I am pleased to share that all six of our buildings are now equipped for air conditioning! Although this week’s weather has more closely resembled winter than summer, we are prepared for when the temperatures begin to rise. Being able to stay cool in classrooms on hot days makes for a more comfortable and productive learning environment. We are grateful to the Board and our community for this significant investment into our school buildings and learning environments.
Solar Eclipse – Coming on Monday!
All six District 39 schools will be offering special viewing glasses so our students can enjoy Monday’s solar eclipse. We are excited for our students to have the opportunity to witness this amazing natural phenomenon. Your building principal has communicated the details for Monday’s viewing and we ask for your support in speaking with your child about the importance of following teacher direction and wearing glasses while viewing the eclipse.
