The mission of Omaha North High Magnet School is to prepare all students for success in lifelong studies and careers.

Greetings Viking Family,

We ending the first quarter of the school year, students are working hard to earn credits and staff members are striving to provide high quality learning experiences daily. Now that we have established routines and procedures, we ask that you review expectations for your child(ren) in the following areas:

· Wearing School appropriate dress

· Arriving to school and class on-time

· Using appropriate Language

· Completing schoolwork on time

There are some students having difficulty meeting expectations and with your support we can help them make better choices. We know that regular class attendance, completing work and being a positive contributor to the learning community positions our students for graduation as well as college & career opportunities moving forward.

School safety continues to be our top priority. As many are aware, the influence of social media on our students is often at odds with our goal of helping students be Responsible, Respectful and Accountable. Again, we ask for your support in reminding students to follow our safety protocols by not engaging in any social media challenges that encourage negative behavior, refrain from using social media platforms to bully/shame or intimidate classmates and recording/sharing content that does not represent themselves, their family, or the North High Community in a positive light.

We also continue to adjust to the new reality of teaching and learning amid a pandemic. Please know that we are following health & safety protocols including mask wearing, frequent handwashing and sanitizing high touch points. Continue to screen students daily before sending them to school. If they are not well, keep them home. Contact the school nurse if your child is awaiting results or tests positive.

As you will see in the newsletter items below, despite the recent challenges, students are excelling in a variety of areas. At Omaha North High Magnet everyone can get involved in positive activities that prepare them for success in lifelong learning and careers!

October 19 is PreACT Test Day- No School for 9, 11, and 12 grade students

Again this school year, all sophomores (Grade 10 students) will have the opportunity to take the PreACT. PreACT is modeled after the ACT testing experience but within a shorter test window on four of the ACT test subjects: English, math, reading, and science. This is a great opportunity for students to practice and prepare for taking the ACT in the future. In addition, schools will be able to use results to provide both current achievement and projected future ACT test scores.

The paper/pencil PreACT test administration date is Tuesday, October 19, 2021. All sophomores are encouraged to take the assessment. The test takes a little over 2 ½ hours and requires an environment with no distractions. As a result, sophomores will be the only students in attendance on that date with dismissal at 1:00 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be served. Busses will run as normal in the morning and will arrive at 1:00 p.m. for dismissal. We are excited to offer this opportunity to OPS sophomores.

On Monday, August 30, the Outdoor Club spent an hour working to beautify the north end of the campus. Armed with brooms, trash bags, and paint cans, club members collected debris and brought new life to the sacred "N". The next activity is an afterschool hike to Fontenelle Park on Monday, September 27th. Everyone is welcome to join.

The Omaha North High Chapter of SkillsUSA will be hosting a Craft/Vendor Fair on Nov. 20th from 9-3 in the Viking Center.

Funds raised from this event will help offset costs for the SkillsUSA Nebraska State Leadership Conference in April.

The 2022 senior cohort of Omaha North's Nebraska College Preparatory Academy is proud to share their pride, dedication, and honor with the work they have spent on completing their final Capstone Research projects. From the words of this senior cohort, they are proud of staying on track with their academic and life goals and organizing their scholarly research in anticipation of their senior reception. This summer they utilized their NCPA Summer Camp experience by working with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Librarians to develop and present their capstones. The highlight of this experience is how proud they are of their work and presenting their work to a large student body, as they stated, "It was really amazing how involved you felt with other NCPA seniors and how proud we are for sticking with it and knowing we are a part of this connected family!"

Have you seen the new Omaha North High Magnet School cross-country uniforms? The downtown Omaha skyline provides an eye-catching backdrop for the Lady Vikings’ running gear this year.

The girls’ team had a hand in the design process, working with a local photographer to finalize the new look. They drew inspiration from the University of Miami Track & Field/ Cross Country uniforms.

North’s cross country team hosted fundraising events to help with the purchase of their new design.

The Black Student Leadership Council spent their non-student day engaging in the African American business tour. They visited Ital Vital Smoothie Shop, the Omaha North Star, and the Great Plains Museum. The group worked its way to TopFlight Fitness for a quick workout, followed by tasty treats from Huskerland Popcorn. They stopped in historical Benson for selfies (SelfieShop), homemade cookies (Ruby's Place), and ate a tasty southern meal at the Taste of New Orleans. They ended the day taking portraits in the Florence area at Frison's Photography.

Outdoor Club was in action again, cleaning up the neighborhood between North and Fontenelle Park. Our next planning meeting will be afterschool on October 11th, in room 314.

The Legion of Valor nominees are rated on academics, JROTC activities and community service using the whole person concept. Final selection is made by the Legion of Valor of the United States of America, INC, in Fairfax, VA. It was Founded as the Medal of Honor Legion in 1890 and Charted by Act of Congress in 1955. Approximately 27 cadets nationwide receive this award. Omaha Public Schools has had nearly 100 recipients since the national award began in 1961. In 1995, Omaha Public Schools was the first and only school district in the nation to have five recipients. This happened again in 1996, and again this year.

Congrats to Noah Jacob!

ArteLatinX is a biennial art exhibition bringing together Latinx artists from all over the Great Plains. The High School Exhibition allows all high school students in the following school districts: Omaha Public Schools, Bellevue Public Schools, Papillion-La Vista Community Schools, Ralston Public Schools, Council Bluffs Community Schools, and Omaha Catholic Schools to submit one art piece. This exhibit will be a juried exhibition with 30 available slots.

All students are welcome to apply. Latinx students are especially encouraged!

The dimensions of the art piece are Portrait 11 x 14 inches; the art piece can be executed with any technique of illustration, painting, digital art, printmaking, collage, etc.

Art pieces should relate to the official motto/lema of ArteLatinX 2022: “In It Together/Juntos en Esto”.

Submissions must be submitted by Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at 11:59pm.
