Notification of Data Breach
Dear Parents and Staff,
Recently USD #499 was informed of a widespread data breach affecting schools across the United States and Canada that use the PowerSchool student information system. It is important to note that this breach did not originate from USD #499’s systems.
PowerSchool is actively working with all impacted school districts to assess the extent of the breach, understand its impact, and ensure the security of all stored information. The majority of the data in our PowerSchool system consists of contact information, such as addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses.
USD #499 will continue to remain in close communication with PowerSchool as they provide updates and take steps to address this situation. We are committed to keeping you informed as more details become available.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Toby VanCleave
Superintendent

Financial Literacy Added to GHS Curriculum
This year, as part of a statewide requirement, Galena High School added a semester credit of financial literacy to the list of required credits for high school graduation, with the required change becoming effective with the Graduating Class of 2028.
The course is being taught by Mr. J.C. Dawes. The curriculum of the course provides a vast array of financial literacy components including but not limited to topics over investing, banking, loans, credit cards, credit, credit scores, taxes, economics, ownership versus leasing/renting, how money works, marketing, decision making, short and long term vision setting and career planning.
High School Club Learning New Skills and Creativity
Once a month, Galena High School has a club day where students can attend a variety of clubs and activities. One of these clubs is the Crochet Club, which is sponsored by Ms. Jessica Shank. Students in this club have learned the basics of crocheting and have been working on square pattern projects as a group. In the very near future, the square blocks will be combined to make a custom blanket, which they plan on raffling off to one very lucky person.
Spanish Classes enjoying Rosca, Ponche, and Doce Uvas!
Students discussed traditions done for Three King's Day, which is celebrated on January 6th by trying to find the hidden baby figure inside of the sweet bread called Rosca. They also tried a hot apple cider called Ponche, commonly drank during the winter season in Mexico. They finished class with a New Year's Eve tradition done at midnight in Spain and in Mexico, and that was eating, or trying to eat, 12 grapes to the 12 chimes of the clock for good luck called Campanadas.
