As we come to the end of the first quarter, our journey remains a positive one. Over the past few weeks we've seen some spectacular displays of school spirit, shared some very interesting messages of success through CollegeGoWeek (http://www.learnmoreindiana.org/college/), and hosted the IHSAA student-athlete Leadership Conference where over twenty Jennings County student-athletes also participated. As we enter October and Fall, our sports seasons are starting to wrap up with Peyton Whitehead finishing girls golf as a regional qualifier and both cross country teams vying for another "run" at sectional titles. This past weekend, our boys cross-country finished first in the HHC for the first time in 41 years! With October, we're also taking time for a short vacation as Fall Break is from October 10th through October 14th. Upon our return we'll, again, be welcoming Sergeant Terry Hall former Indiana State Police Officer into our district school-buildings to discuss positive choices. More information on that can be found near the end of this eNewsletter and will be coming to you in a letter right before fall break. Also, we're always looking for ways to celebrate the many positives in Jennings County Schools. Along those lines, our graduation rate from last year is now official...94%! That's an outstanding achievement which can be attributed to the diligence and hard work of our students and our staff! Wishing everyone a restful fall break.

Sophomore Alex Hendrix finished runner-up, third place was junior Franklin Sanders, fourth was Freshman Carter Leak, 13th was Ryan Gasper and 17th was Wayne Komsi!

The parking lot paintings are nearing complete. We have 1/2 of 2 to finish. Heat and rain have not been our best friends! Those that participated tell of how they LOVE seeing their spaces painted. We hope for this to grow and for more people to participate.

NAHS volunteered to assist local charitable organization, Delta Theta Tau in Painting in the Park with a Kid day, helping to raise nearly one thousand dollars that will go to our student scholarships and Hoosier Girls State.

October will bring a High Ability grades 4 and 5 workshop to JCHS. High School High Ability students will assist in leading our groups in 21st Century learning skills and brain games/problem solving.

Drawing students have been working on foreshortening, a drawing technique of showing depth of space on a 2D surface. AP students are finding their artistic voice and learning to take risks. Kamryn Castetter was so afraid of using power tools and she overcame her fear with our latest project!

And finally, congratulations to our very own Karen Chilman who was named Kiwanis Citizen of the year!

Business Department: Strategic Marketing

Strategic Marketing is a course, which provides opportunities for students enrolled previously or concurrently in a vocational class to gain “real world” attitudes, skills, knowledge, and first-hand experience working their senior year for a local business. Emphasis is on the development of skills and understanding related to marketing, merchandising, and management. Strategic Marketing includes various combinations of subject matter experiences related to the performance of activities that direct the flow of goods and services, including their appropriate utilization, from the producer to the consumer or industrial user. These activities include selling and such sales supporting functions as buying, transporting, storing, promoting, financing, marketing research, and management. The English Department is offering a unique opportunity for students this year. Students who are not completing assignments or need extra help with assignments have help available through after school Homework Detention. The detention is held every other Tuesday, after school until 5:00. During this time a licensed English teacher is facilitating and assisting students as they work to complete assignments. Piloted last year, this program has allowed students to increase proficiency in skills and standards and earn English credits necessary to receive their high school diplomas. This time is also a great opportunity for students who have limited or no internet service available to complete online assignments.

Also, freshmen have started English remediation on Fridays. Students who need a little extra help are being pulled from their study halls to receive some extra one-on-one help in preparation for the ISTEP test next year, and so they can show mastery of the English standards. We are very excited about this opportunity for our students. It is a great program.

Geometry students in Mr. Cummings’ period one class recently applied their math skills to square-up the Junior Varsity Baseball field. Students researched the official measurements and planned the process in class prior to going out to the field. Once there, they measured the distance between bases and found the distance to be 90 feet, the official distance for a high school field. They also measured the distance between first base and third base and the distance between second base and home plate. It was determined that these measures were not the same. The students then applied their knowledge of right triangles, along with the fact that a baseball diamond is actually a square, to calculate the correct distance. They used the calculated distance to adjust and mark the correct locations for the bases on the field. The students enjoyed applying the math they learned in class to a real world situation, as well as being outside on a beautiful sunny morning!

The is month in Miss Stacy Bezy's Geography and History of the World classes, students studied weather and climate, which includes formations and effects of tornadoes. After studying the Fujita Scale students became "tornado investigators" and were tasked with placing damage scale pictures into one of the 6 Fujita scale categories. They had to offer evidence and back up their opinions using the descriptions of damage from the scale. The goal is to bring authentic style activities and the real world to students in an interactive format.

RealCare Babies go home for the first time this weekend.

This is a computer simulation for the Child Development Classes and involves giving care similar for a newborn for at least forty-eight hours. Students must change diapers, rock, feed, burp, and respond to Baby’s cries around the clock.

Mrs. Axsom teaches this class.

Education Professions students are at work at year long internships. The sixteen future teachers are at NVE, Brush Creek, Graham Creek, St. Mary’s Preschool, and JCMS.

This is a dual credit class and students receive four hours of college credit from Ivy Tech.

The class is open to both juniors and seniors, and enrollment is decided from applications

in the spring for the following school year. Mrs. Romine teaches this class.

The Jennings County FFA had 3 teams participate in the Area Soils CDE at SEPAC on Sept. 28th. The top team placed 7th in the contest. That same evening, 40 FFA members attended the District Kickoff at South Ripley. They learned leadership skills and ways to get more involved in FFA.

The FFA also hosted Ag Day in September for the Jennings County 4th graders. Lots of learning about agriculture occurred and a fun time was had. We also helped with the Selmier Forestry Days on September 27th & 28th by assisting with popcorn preparation for the youngsters.

About 8 members helped with the Jennings County Seniors Prom held last Sunday. They helped with the meal and assisted the guests.

The first week of October, FFA Fruit Sales kicks off with a bang!! See any FFA member to order fruit.

FFA Forestry Judging & Crops Judging gets started with practices gearing up for competition in November.

Later in October, 26 FFA members will be attending the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis along with about 60,000 other FFA members from across the nation. Lots of leadership sessions, workshops, and expo time will help them gain valuable skills and knowledge to make them better agriculture ambassadors.

Engineering and Technology News

Students have been working hard on several different projects in construction and transportation. We have completed re-roofing the dugouts on the varsity baseball field. We will be in the process of painting dugouts once the weather dries up.

Students in Tech Systems have finished up their communication unit where they have been learning about drafting and the basics of CAD (Computer Aided Drafting)

Engineering students had the opportunity to visit Purdue University and take a tour of campus and dorms and speak to faculty in the Engineering department.

Engineering and Manufacturing students had the opportunity to listen to guest speakers from Metaldyne, Jake Schmidt and Mark Echard. Students were also able to tour the the facility on the 9/28 and 9/29.

PVE is a class at JCHS that provides students with job opportunities through our job shadowing, internship program and PVE 1 & 2,. PVE opens doors for students that might not normally have this opportunity. The purpose of golf outing is to raise money to offset costs related to student job uniforms, coffee shop equipment and supplies, field trips, and any other student need, for helping obtain employment during and after high school.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Jennings County School Corporation has invited Sergeant Terry Hall to return again this year to present the “Body Safety Program” to all our elementary and high school students. Sergeant Hall is a 38-year veteran of the Indianapolis Police Dept., attended training at the FBI Academy, spent several years working with the U.S. Secret Service, and is now the Program Director of “The Body Safety Program.” He has presented at hundreds of schools throughout Indiana, and thousands of schools throughout the world.

You are invited to attend the informational parents’ meeting on Monday evening, October 17, 2016 at the Don Pelkey Auditorium at JCHS at 6:00pm. This gives parents the opportunity to preview the program, ask questions, and receive information about indicators of molestation. The October 17th program is an adult presentation so children are not to be in attendance.

We know, as educated-parents, you would never refuse to let your child attend a vital safety program, without attending an informational meeting about its contents first. However, after attending and hearing about the content, if you still do not want your child to attend, please send in a note to the main office and we'll find an alternative setting during the presentation.

Terry Hall will present to JCHS students on the morning of October 20th.

JCHS will be hosting Parent-Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, October 5th and Thursday, October 6th from 4PM to 7PM. Report Cards will be available through your student's White-8 (last period) teacher.
