Elementary Math Nights
Tonight, Thursday, January 23, 2025, all three elementary schools will host a math night from 5:00-6:00 pm where families and students can enjoy games and activities together. I will begin at Discovery School at Four Corners, head to Federal Street Elementary School, then finish the tour at Newton Elementary School. I look forward to these events each year as they are always so fun and well attended by families. Hope to see many students and families having fun with math tonight!
Springfield Thunderbirds v. Providence Bruins
Saturday, January 25, 2025, I will be joining many students and families in the Green Wave Nation section of the Springfield Thunderbirds game at the Mass Mutual Center, Springfield. Puck drops at 7:05 pm! Hope to see you there!
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
Every child, every seat, every day!
The district continues to work with students and families on improving student attendance. We continue to focus our efforts in making each school environment a place where everyone is safe, healthy, and ready to learn. When students miss too many days, the effects are impactful to their learning. Please talk with your student about how important it is for them to come to school. Please reach out to your building principal for any assistance the school can provide as well.
January is Responsible Decision-Making Month
Look who's been caught bee-ing amazing!
Another week and another wave of rock stars in the Green Wave Nation! Leah, a 6th grader at Greenfield Middle School (below), has taken the initiative to help a student in need. Shout out to Leah for being an excellent example of how kindness matters!

Student Spotlight
GHS Senior, Jerry Ven, is a dedicated student-athlete, playing on the varsity football team and serving as the captain of both the indoor and outdoor track teams. He is also actively involved in Key Club, Barbell Club, and Student Council, where he contributes to his school community.
An avid outdoorsman, Jerry enjoys spending his free time exploring trails, boating, and relaxing by bonfires with friends. He also works at his uncle's pizza restaurant and landscapes for Snows Landscaping during the summer.
In addition to his athletic and outdoor pursuits, Jerry enjoys dancing and singing. After high school, he plans to study business in college and continue developing his leadership skills.

Newton Students Shine!
Newton Elementary School's hallways are lined with wonderful art work created by the students. Ms. Lyons has been working with students to make winter fun with the kindergarten and second grade winter collages. The third and fourth grade students have been busy creating fruit art after studying the work of a Mexican artist, Rufina Tamaya. Great job!
GHS Trivia Team
Today the GHS Trivia Team (also known as the As Schools Match Wits Team) traveled to Pope Francis Prep School for the Blender Bowl Trivia Tournament. They faced off against 25 other schools from across Western Mass and the entirety of Connecticut. The Greenfield team came in 4th place out of 26- including going undefeated in the preliminary rounds. The group worked hard and really enjoyed the tournament! We are so proud of their performance!
On Saturday, February 22nd tune into PBS at 7 PM to watch their episode of As School's Match Wits!
Nurse's Notes
The CDC recommends that you stay home and away from others (including people you live with who are not sick) if you have respiratory virus symptoms that aren't better explained by another cause. These symptoms can include fever, chills, fatigue, cough, runny nose, and headache, among others.
1. You can go back to your normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, both are true:
2. Your symptoms are getting better overall; and
3. You have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication).
When you go back to your normal activities, take added precautions over the next 5 days, such as wearing a face mask when you will be around other people indoors.
1. Keep in mind that you may still be able to spread the virus that made you sick, even if you are feeling better. You are likely to be less contagious at this time, depending on factors like how long you were sick or how sick you were.
2. If you develop a fever or you start to feel worse after you have gone back to normal activities, stay home and away from others again until, for at least 24 hours, both are true: your symptoms are improving overall, and you have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication). Then take added precautions for the next 5 days.
